Jonah’s call updated. A team of
workers has heard the call and
leaves Nov. 17 for the city of Rio, the seventh-
largest city in the world, and, according to
many, its most beautiful.
Rio is located on a striking harbor on the
southeast coast of Brazil. A Brazilian proverb
describes Rio in these words, “If God took
seven days to make the world, he spent two of
them making Rio.”
Rio is also a big city with big city prob-
lems. Thirty percent of its population lives in
slums, of which there are more than 5(X). The
city is haunted by urban crime and pollution.
Yet its very need attracts workers, such as

Today ... will be a day this church never forgets."
These were the words of Joe Bagby, minister for the Sweetwater, Texas, Church, on the morn-
ing of September 20, after 18 people responded to the morning message. Hours later, Bagby and
other members witnessed a tragic electrical fire that completely destroyed the 105-year-old
building’s auditorium and classroom facilities. One of the biggest fires in Sweetwater’s history,
the blaze lasted for nearly nine hours, forcing firefighters to knock out portions of the building’s
outside walls in an attempt to contain the flames.

Impact meets goal
HOUSTON, TEXAS
With the help of twelve congrega-
tions and 100 individuals, the Impact
church, Houston, recently met its cam-
paign goal of $1.8 million.
The congregation began in 1987 in a
depressed area of downtown Houston
and is now home to more than 400
members. Since its founding, the church
has begun offering community service
programs, including tutoring for high
school students, a pre-school for chil-
dren of abusive families and a clothing
distribution center. The funds will bene-
fit the church’s programs, allowing for
continued work in the downtown area.
