YOUNG ACHIEVERS: Diane Roman
Mercedes, Texas, Thursday, October,8, 1970
Satisfaction Is A Useful Young Life
by Florine Perry
Diane Roman of Mercedes
is going about her business
of being a good citizen in
her quiet unassuming man-
ner, yet achieving many hon-
ors along the way - in 4-H
work, in school work, and
with her art projects.
Diane’s 4-H work recently
won her an ALL AROUND
SECOND ribbon, a distinc-
tion attained by excellence
in personal performance in
varied activities. Her‘’Rib-
bon Display Board** holds
numerous ribbons she has
won in various endeavors,
including ten FIRST place
ribbons in 4-H work.
In the Arts and Crafts
Division, she won a first
place ribbon for each of
three entries, a wall hang-
ing featuring a bunch of
grapes in colored yarn, a
ceramic tile flower pot, and
a manger scene.
Foods winning first place
for Diane were carrot cook-
ies made by a friend’s re-
cipe, carrot bread made by
her mother’s recipe, canned
citrus (lemon, orange,
grapefruit) marmalade, and
frozen citrus (layers of
orange and grapefruit) juice.
In 4-H competition, Diane
won first place with her
pants suit, made of woolen
plaid, with all the plaids
matching perfectly. She
wears the suit when going
to the skating rink or going
on hayrides. She makes
almost all of her own dress-
es. To earn money for her
sewing needs, she keeps
books at her father’s store,
after school hours and dur-
ing summer vacation - part-
time, as needed.
Diane’s demonstration on
maintenance of farm mach-
inery won her a first place
locally and sent her on to
win first place in the
district.
A first place in which
many people have been in-
terested is Diane’s first
place in public speaking. She
gave a speech, “Making the
World a Better Place to Live
in,” at the 4-H Barbecue
Dinner at the Civic Center
in Mercedes. The ideas
presented in the speech were
realistic and constructive.
Diane attends Mercedes
Public Schools and has made
the honor roll most of the
time. For the last two years
she has made the “straight
A” honor roll. In 7th grade,
Diane received a pin for this
distinction. Last school
year (in 8th grade) she was
honored, along with other
straight A average high sch-
ool students, at a banquet.
The banquet has become an
annual event, sponsored by
the Lion’s Club of Mercedes.
Not only did Diane win
acclaim in the academic
realm, but she also won
first and second place reT
cognition in relay racing in
track. She also won two
first place medals in band.
Diane has been the “class
artist” since first grade and
has helped with window and
room decoration and other
art projects. She painted a
spooky graveyard scene fea-
turing ghosts, cornstalks,
pumpkins, and trees for the
Halloween program while in
grade school. She painted
