Shall claim of death cause us to grieve.
Anil make our courage faint or fall?
Nay, let us faith and hope receive—
The rose still grows beyond the wall.
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall.
Slowly rising to a loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall.
Through which there shone a beam of light.
Onward it crept with added strength.
With never a thought of fear or pride;
And it followed the light, through the crevice's
. length.
And unfolded itself on the other side.
Near shady wall a rose once grew.
Budded and blossomed in God’s free light.
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.

No! It was not from the want, of co-operation that Pri >-
ident Hoover suffered.
It, was from the lack of vision and right orientation to
his problems. It was from his persistent choice of the wrong
approach.
It was from his obstinate addiction to commissions as
substitutes for brain and courage or as Mr. Hoover put it.
with spraying words that blurred the lines and blunted the
sharp angles of simple truth and directness—‘‘specially quali-

agencies and facilities.”

NMNM
Here was the point of specific difference between Mr.
Roosevelt and President Hoover.
To have expected Mr. Roosevelt to co-operate in a
inula of procedure which he had stated that he did not ap-
prove, and which, in the past, had proved uniformly disas-
trous. was applying to co-operation much too severe a test.

Mr Hoovet. profiting nothing from the exchange of
views which he sought, and choosing to disregard the un-

the indicated opposition of the newly elected congress to the
idea of a debt funding commission merely renewed his oft-
