WASHINGTON, (UP) —Instal-
lation of improved lighting facili-
ties, air conditioning and other
comfort to the traveling public,
has resulted in a greater demand
for ellctriclty on traina today than
ever before, the Association of
American Railroads report*.
Due to the fact that the public

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 20 (UP)—
Carl Laemmle, who entered mo-
tion picture production work 31
years ago and retired last spring,
came back today from a long
European jaunt with his son, Carl,
Jr.
The smiling, elderly producer,'
declared definitely he was through
with pictures but hinted his son
may become an independent pro-
ducer.
The elder Laemmle received $5,-
500,000 for Universal Studio
from a new film company formed
by Standard Capitol of New
York.
Laemmle disclosed he was a
department store owner, having
stopped off on his trip home at
Grand Island, Neb., where he pur-
chased an interest in a store of
an old friend.

PARIS (UP) — Black will be
smarter than ever before this
winter and for a very plausible
reason — the French stay-in
strikes which paralyzed the tex-
tile and dyeing industries most
of the summer have affected the
collections of the couturiers who
set the styles of the world.
Therefore, materials are far
less ornate than is usual in
Paris. The fancy checks, plaids
and tufted weaves all take a
long time to prepare, as do the
exotic and unusual colors usually
seen in Paris collections.
Black simple and smart, is the
traditional shade for the chic
Parisian and is usually relieved by
touches of white. Bright red,
green, turquoise and a bright royal
blue are used this year to offset
dead black.
Schiaparelli brightens her dark
suits with colored gloves and
shoes—the latter completely cov-
ering the instep and hinting that
shoes will be even higher next
year. The new wine red kidskin
models axe exactly like Indian
moccasins with a long vamp ex-
tending high on the instep. The
moccasins, naturally, have high
heels and a square or well round-
ed toe.
Some of the new Schiaparelli
black suits are worn with crim-
red shoes and gloves, while
others are brightened by
