Hits Gambling
Over Alabama
Drive Made On Vice
Also By Special
Grand Juries
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (U.R) —
Widespread gambling activities
arc- on the spot in Alabama.
Many sections of the state,' fol-
lowing the lead of Alabama's larg-
est city, are initiating intensive in-
vestigations into alleged gambling
and corruption.
The sudden anti-vice campaign
is spreading and may involve
many of the state's 67 counties.
Birmingham fired the spark by
naming a special grand jury to
investigate. A five-day inquiry by
the body resulted in impeachment
charges being brought against
Sheriff Harry E. Smith.
The grand jury charged him
with selling the privilege to run
illegal giunbling devices in the
county, selling the post of chief
deputy sheriff and "neglect of
duty" in general.
S, r r. .i Sheriff Accused
Shortly thereafter, Gov. , Frank
M. Dixon, in Montgomery, ordered
the attorney-general to file im-
peachment charges against Sheriff
U. G. Watford of Houston county,
at the opposite end of the state,
en charges of "wilful neglect of
duty and corruption in office."
This action came after a five-
weeks investigation cjf the sheriff's
accounts and activities by special
state investigators.
The two sheri.Vs iwill be tried by
the state stipyeme court, now in
summer recess, sometime after it.
convenes on October 1.
Immediately, other Alabama
counties began jfailing in line : and;
announced iijji-estigatjops, . '
Circuit Judge W. W. Wallace of
Shelby county said he .would ask
for a grand jury investigation of
gambling in the ccunty when the:
jury is impanelled as he feared
the state capital,. Sheriff Addie
Moseley. while asserting there was
no .widespread gaming there,
sought to determine legality ot
minor types of slot and pinball
machines with a view to cleaning
them up.
Moseley said his deputies
ready had cleaned up all "one-
armed bandit" and "roseoe" type
slot machines.
Meantime, Bessemer, industrial
city 10 miles from Birmginham,
launched a grand jury investiga-
tion of gambling in the Bessemer
Cut-off section of Jefferson coun-
ty.
A sheriff's posse at Guntersville
on the Tennessee river even raided
a palatial, three-deck stern-iwheel-
er. the Idlewild, and confiscated
500 cases of beer, six slot machines
temoprarily ruining the business
of the pleasure craft. Guntersville
is in dry Marshall county.
While conditons over the state
are expected to be curtailed due ot
enforcement pressure, indications
are majny counties are herjding for
grand jury investigations and
further clean-u^s may be expected
in the next ftftv months.
