It began inauspiciously for
the University of Miami Hur
ricanes with seven turnovers
in a 28-3 loss to Florida, the
worst setback ever suffered
by a team destined to
become college football's na-
tional champions
It didn't get much better
the following week until Jeff
Davis kicked his third field
goal late in the first half to
give Miami a 9-7 over
Houston in a game the Hur
ricanes went on to win 29-7.
But it was all downhill
after that and it culminated
Tuesday when Miami was
named national champion
for 1983 by the Associated
Press in the wake of a stunn-
ing 31-30 upset of No
1-ranked Nebraska in Mon-
day night's Orange Bowl It
more than made up for the
state championship the Hur
ricanes didn't win
"After we got by the loss to
Florida and the first half
against Houston, we had
pretty smooth sailing (until
late in the season 1," Coach
Howard Schnellenberger
said Tuesday at a morning
after news conference

Brazoswood got the jump
on Calhoun in the first period
leading the quarter 21-16. At
one point the Crabs were 10
points behind but they
managed to move within five
points of the Bucs by the end
of the period.
An interesting side note of
the first period was a two
point shot made by Wade
Treybig Treybig was fouled
and falling over the end line
as he rolled over tossing the
ball up making an almost
impossible field goat
Dominating again in the
second period. Brazoswood
scored 20 points to Calhoun's
15 for the quarter giving the
Bucs a 10 point lead at the
half.
Calhoun rallied in the third
period to come within two
points of Brazoswood's 15
points for the quarter
The Sandcrabs, hurt and
tired from the battle thus
far. gave up 30 points in the
fourth period to the Bucs as
they scored only 12 points
themselves.

HOUSTON (AP) - Hugh
Campbell admits his new
job as head coach of the
Houston Oilers, who have
won only three games in
two seasons, is scary like

for the first time
He hopes the landing will
be soft
"It is the challenge and a
bit of the unknown but it is
a challenge I look forward
to accepting,” Campbell
said Tuesday after agree-
ing to become the 12th Oiler
coach in the franchise's
25-year history "We are all
nuts to be in coaching in the

ing for a challenge ’’
Campbell, 42, who
directed the Edmonton
Eskimos to five Canadian
Football League champion
ships, has definitely found
a challenge
to the Rues of all the Calhoun
teams finishing their game
with a 49-45 loss.
High scorers for the
sophomore squad were Brad
Carran with 12 points and
Cecil Perez with 10 points
