Iir ed To Curb
Tuberculosis
Expert Offers 5-Point
Program to Wipe
Out Disease
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (U.R) — A
physician who cured himself o
tuberculosis and later became pre
sident of the Southern Tubercu-
U.'iis Conference believes the
disease can be stamped out in tn
United States through a five-point
program. . • Jil
He is Dr. Paul Tu>fur, superin-
tendent of the Kentucky State
Tuberculosis Sanatorium at I«ou!-;
ville. He advocates the following
steps to eradicate the dis-ae:
1. Tuberculin-testing or X ray
ing of all school teachers.
2. Tuberculin-testing of athletes,
especially those in high school.
3. More field work and trav« I
mg clinics.
4. Co-ordination of all machin
ery now available to fight th'
disease.
5. Furthering an educational
program.
Dr. Turner said.some states al
ready hav> laws requiring exam
ination of teach* rs.
He said that two of every 10
teacheis examined were found t«
have postive reactions. In srnu
instance, he said, open cases o:
tuberculosis were found on ath-
letic teams.
'A few years ago, one of tht
best halfbacks on one of the bef
ter high school teams in Ken-
tucky was examined and found v.
have tuberculosis in a fairly ad
vanced stage, a cavity in one
lung," Dr. Turner said; 'He had '
played football the previous day.
Bre iter reaction to tuber; u!;r
tests is found in schools where a
teacher, bus driver, janitor, 01
a student has tuberculosis.
"Ninety per cent of the chil
dren under a teacher with an
open case of tuberculosis were
found to react in one instance,
^ said. "But parents shouldn't
become pinicky at such a happen
in^ as this. This means that they
simply have received their first
infection and that each child
should b X-rayed periodical}'. The
Secondary type of tuberculosis is
th - destructive type, and it is
most prevalent in the 15 to 30-
year-old group."
Dr. Turner said that 50 per cent
more tuberculosis patients were
being cured now through surgi-
cal treatment than in previous
years.
"Doctors can control tubercu-
losis if their knowledege and
facilities are put to full use and
an educational program is insti-
tuted," he said.
Crop Outlet
To Be Widened
SCHENECTADY, N. Y. <U.B> —
The Federal government plans to
put to work 200 scientists to din-
covei new uistfi and wider outlets
for surplus crops.
In a farm forum speech Dr.
Henry G. Knight of the Depart-
ment of Agriculture^ said studies
will be made to seek new outlets
for tobacco, dairy prod ;c s apples'
ve/. tables, white |>otatoe«{, animal
fats, hides, skins and leather.
K.light is chief of the bureau
of Agriculture chemistry and en-
gineering. which is directing the
establishment of four research
laboratories authorized by Con-
:.reiM.
H. said the most important re-
search to be undertaken n con-
nection with tabocco will be a
prom am looking toward expand-
ing the uses to nicotine. He said
nicotine is highly toxic to insect
life and is usefui both as a' con-
tact insecticide and stomach poi-
son.
"It is in the insecticide field
where the great* st hope apparent-
ly lies for increased consumption
of tobacco products," Knight slid.
Of widespread seasonal milk
surpluses he said:
It is planned to carry on work
that is hoped will result in the
discovery o f new and improved
mat rial-i that may be derived by
polymerization o r other type of
modification and which, because
« f unique properties, may be com
mereially utili;able in the form of
molded plastics."
Of the apple surplus he point-
ed to the development of an im-
proved apple juice, new dried ap-
ple products and new uses for
pe tin, cuticle wax, seed oil and
resdual pulp of apples.
AONTOGMKRY. Ala. <U.P) —
Alabama ha:- only four more prac-
ticing physicians today than it had
