Sally explained as much of the
situation as she thought safe, with-

“Old Mr Proctor died soon after

But old Mr.
Proctor wouldn't hear of It. That’s
how I found It out, on account of
all the arguing and the phone calls
and everything there was for a while
there. And the threats."
"Threats?”
“I should say there were threats!
I heard Mike Collins and the old man
argue and I could see In—they were
In the library and I was at the head
of the stairs and I couM see them
part of the time In the mirror. This
was the day before I quit. The old
man ordered Mike Collins out of the
house or he’d kill him. I heard him
say It. He yelled it at him, too.
And Mike Collins—I saw him tn the
glass—he drew back his list and hit
Mr. Proctor. He knocked him down.
Then he made a move toward him
and I saw Jasper, the butler. He
came all of a sudden Into the mirror.
And he jtnnped between Mike Collins
and old Mr. Proctor. And Mike Col-
lins hit him. too. He knocked him
clean across the room. And then I
heard somebody bangin' In and Mike
Collins’ hands went up. It was Fred
Proctor. He had come In from the
back of ths house. He must have
beard the flght. And he had an auto-
matic gun In hla hand. He began
cusaln' out Mike Collins and walked
up and cracked him on the jaw
while he kept the gun on him. Mike
Collins backed out the door. I drew
back Into my room—I was stayin'
there then—and saw Mike go out the
door. The last thing I heard him
yell was at old Mr. Proctor. ’I’ll
get you for this, you old double-
crosser,’ I heard him say."
The girl paused and looked fear-
fully at Sally. "That night was the
night Fred Proctor got drunk and—
and," she dropped her head, "And
the next day I quit. It was only
three days later old Mr. Proctor was
shot So I didn’t dare show myself
and a friend of mine got me this
job down hore."
Half an hour later Sally was
watching the lights of Miami drop
behind. Her nerves tingled with ex-
citement And it was not long be-
fore she was in Daytona Beach, in
Alice Cramer's little touring car, ap-
proaching the dark Proctor villa
