With toe subject. "Clianges Come
to Bible Lands,” the home econom-
ics department of the Shakespeare
Club, meeting with Mrs. L. W. New-
ton and Mrt. W. R. Lakey Thurs-
day afternoon, heard Mrs Belle
Stanlforth, Bible student, tell of
Palestine s being changed from a
dessert land to a modern Garden
of Eden and the Jew* returned to
the land that God gave their Fa-
Uier Abraham and hte Ued by an
everlasting covenant, after having
been without a nation and a home
for nearly 19 centuries.
Mrs. Stanlforth spoke of new
building going on In Palestine and
new industries being developed,
making it assume proportions of
the most prosperous country of toe
world today The Dead Sea, from
lime immemorial conslflered a syn-
onym for all that te useless and
unproductive, has become a thing
productive, conferring health and
benefits on thousands of humans.
Titles told of toe climate as unbear-
able have proved false, and instead
oi a place of death and desolation ; {^YTortosai
inuugn toe sea air and salt water, t. al_„ „
she said.
Three industrial enterprises stand
out—the commercialising of toe
minerals in the Dead Sea, the lay-
ing of a pipeline of more than 1,000
miles carrying oil from Mesopota-
mia to toe Mediterranean and a
great electric power plant con-
structed for harnessing toe waters
ot tiie Jordan Rlvere Other pro-
jects mentioned In recent develop-
ments are a potash plant at the
north end of the great sea and at
the south end stands a mountain
of pure salt The orange industry
is one of toe greatest new devel-
opments. the Jaffa orange being
considered unusually delicious.
There is said to be^yio unemploy-
ment in toe country, and a con-
stant stream of men and money to
the land of their fathers that has
laid so long as a desert waste Bi-
ble students feel, site said, that toe
prophecy of the Holy Scriptures,
in Isaiah, is being fulfilled.
The hostesses served delicious re-
freshments to members and two
guests, Mrs A L. Abbey and Miss
Cora Coleman.

Marriages are dissolved in court.
It begins to look as though they
might be made there, too. Shock-

more couples are being married by
Justices ot the peace.
' Made io Court
In some countries two services,
one church and one state, are nec-
essary. If only one, It must be a
civil service. So. after all, these
modem Romeos who rush into
court and tell their troublee to a
Judge, are probably doing the
right, if not the romantic, tiling.
Women, pioneers of tiie race,
have long since gone into court
