The major leagues enter the back
stretch of their pennant race to-
day without much to run for ex-
cept the fun of running.
The double All-Star shows,
which raised $100,000 for the base-
ball equipment fund for service-
men. $70,000 for Army and Navy
relief and sold $60,000 in war sav-
ings stamps, marked the approxim-
ate halfway point In the sche-
dule.
At the intermission the Brooklyn
Dodgers were, eight games In front
of the St. Louis Cardinals in the >
National League and the World
Champion New York Yankees had I
a four-game advantage over the I
Boston Red Sox In the American
This makes it apparent that there !
no longer is any argument about
the eventual pennant winners in
either major league and none of the
baseball celebrities who gathered
In New York and Cleveland for the
All-Star contest* cared even to In-
timate that the Dodger* and Yank-
ees could be headed.- 557
Whatever chance there was of
waylaying the Yanka vanished last
week when the champtons stumbled
into Boston and vanquished the Red
Sox In the first two games of a
three-game series This showed
that even though Joe DlMaggio, Joe , u.njpui^uwi auu*i
Gordon and Charley Keller have most automatically
been In batting slumps of greater i
or leaser duration, and the Yank-
ees’ catching crew la depleted, they
still are able to suppress all Insurg-
ents.
The Dodgers have had their own
way virtually from the start of the
season.
This situation leaves the other
clubs In the big top to find what-
ever satisfaction they can in scram- :
bling for places In the first division ’
and the fans to turn their atten- ;
Hon to the competition tor indt- i
vldual honors.
Today’s resumption of play In i
the majors carried the Eastern
clubs of the National League Into
the west and concentrated the
American League firing In the East.
Four of today's contests are night
