sciousness, so Julie took heart
Pleading, her voice reached out to
him, the only means by which she
could penetrate the thick curtain
of pain that shut him into a hide-
ous world of his own.
Dr. Tom came tn twice. The ssp-

THE VAUXY OF DRATH
Julie reached the hospital just as
the ambulance driver and an or-
derly were wheeling a stretcher
through the door marked Emer-
gency. She caught up with them
in the wide, cool hallway just in-
side.
"Pete.” she said softly.
The dark head on the pillow
turned slightly. He opened his eyes,
recognized her. managed a little |
half-smile “Hello, Sissy "
Then the eyes filled with pain
again. He closed them.
Her heart weeping, Julie's voice
was steady, her eyfs clear as she
said. “We won’t let it hurt long,
Steve.” And she took the big hand I

a moment.
She couldn’t be sure he'd heard,
or that she hadn't imagined the
answering pressure of his cold fin-
gers. But she was sure that Pete
was hurt seriously

brushing aside all preliminaries.
Julie's heart sank as she took her
place beside her father, watched
the world-famous surgeon make
swift examination of a dull-eyed

doctor said finally, turning to Dr.
