Whether or not it s really better,
the T is rapidly gaining in popular-
ity. The Colts employ it, and every
eleven they’ve met this season has
used the T, with the exception of
Grand Prairie . . In District 6AA
only one school—Highland Park—
has a T team However, the fact
that Highland Park is so much bet-
ter than anything else In the district
Is not due to the T. but to more
and better material
lx»ts of local fans wanted to
see the T installed at Denton High
this fall, but H's probably a good
idea that U wasn’t. The ma-
terial here this season just isn't
suited to that formation, and a
lot of good talent might have been
wasted

Let's suppose the Broncos had
used the T Perry Slack would have
been the quarterback under the T
with June Davis, Ed Allen, and
Billy Barnett the top part of the T
Davis does almost all the running,
and when the ball is handed off
by the quarterback, it would be
simply a Job of tackling Davis every
time Unless you have four backs
of near equal ability, and T isn't
so good
From what we’ve seen, the T
is definitely inferior to the single
and double wing when It conies to
passing. The quarterback has to
take the ball, run back, and then
turn around to spot his receiver.
Unless he gets good blocking, he
i» likely to be smeared.
i mong sports circles, the current
argument over the relative
merits of the T-iormation vs. the
single wing is really getting hot.
Some grid experts claim the T can’t
be stopped, while others are just
as positive that it’s just a matter
of time before a defnese is work-
, ed out which will stop it cold.
Texas' loss to Rice last week added
^fuel to the argument.
AU through the srason the
Steers hadn't been able to k<rp a

sequence couldn't get possession
of the ball. Most critics think that

NEW YORK. Oct 31—<AP> —
Bobby Layne of Texas. Ben
Raimondi of Indiana and Gene Rob-
erts of Chattanooga sport the out-
standing offensive records on the
nation's gridirons but the busiest
man with a football these days is
Travelin' Travis Tidwell. Auburn s
quaduple-threat freshman
Layne tope all the collegians in
yardage gained both on the ground
and in the air Raimondi is the
leading passer and Roberts has
covered more yardage while run-
ning with the ball than any of the
rest.
Tidwell, however, is the work-
horse of them all In Auburn's five
games he has carried or thrown
the ball 171 times, scampered a
total of 386 yards on 84 running
plays and completed 44 of 87 passes
for an aggregate of 483 yards
His grand total of 869 yards
makes him the runner-up to Layne
in individual offense Only three
players stand ahead of him In
the passing department, based on
the number of completions, and
only ten boast better ball-carrying
records than his.
In addition to carrying dr throw-
ing the ball 40 times more than
any other player, Tidwell has putti-
ed 17 times, run track 20 kicks
and, apparently finding a spare
moment in some game, caught one
pass
His achievements in his Initial
collegiate season, with an Auburn
team that has won three of its
five games, have landed him in
fast company Statistics announced
today by the National Collegiate
Athletic Bureau show that Tid-
well's companions among the first
five individual offensive leaders to
date are definite All-America can-
didates
Layne retained his leadership in
combined offense by boosting his
total to 942 yards on 112 plays
Third is Herman Wedemeyer,
All-America back from St. Mary's,
wih 736 yards, followed by All-
America Glenn Davis of Army and
Alabama's great Harry Ollmer
with 718 yards each
Raimondi held his lead among
the passers with 46 completions in
92 attempts for a total of 563 yards
Gilmer, In the runner-up spot,
has tossed exactly 100 passes in
six games, completing 45 of them
for 535 yards.
Roberts, who carried the ball 22
times for 116 yards in Chat-
tanooga's 33-13 loss to Miajni of
Florida, is the fifth man to top
the list in the individual rushing
department, which has had a dif-
ferent leader each week this sea-
son He has carried the ball 68
times and gained 564 yards
Rudy (Little Doc) Mobley of
Hardin-Simmonn is the runner - up
with 520 yards, followed by Joe
Rogers of Villanova, last week’s
leader, with 510. Ltoyi
