For Church Buildings
By M. Norvol Young
m
't4j*'wv:.-wJA.su
How are we using this
Norvol Young property which represents
such a tremendous investment? In most instances we use
these buildings less than six hours a week! We spend mil-
lions to maintain our buildings and are content to use
them less than any school building or business plant.
Why is it that so many functional and beautiful
plants stand idle 162 hours each week, 8424 hours each
year? Does it mean that we are doing such an effi-
cient job in six hours that there is no more work to be
done for the members, for the sinners in the commun-
ity? A thousand times “No!”
Let us stop and take stock and see how we can let
God use the buildings we have dedicated to His serv-
ice more hours each week. Never before in history has
Is it because we lack leadership to use these build-
ings more effectively? Is it because we lack imagination
and initiative to help us plan for more Bible classes,
more periods of work and fellowship and prayer? Or is
it because we lack faith in God, hope in Christ, and love
for our fellow man?
It has been estimated
that approximately 11,000,-
000,000 has been spent by
churches of Christ on
church buildings and equip-
ment during this genera-
tion. One builder of church
buildings, Glen Paden, has
erected 700 buildings. Add
to this the amount spent by
previous generations and
you have a staggering sum.
Consider the value of this
in terms of the interest
alone. Six per cent inter-
est on one billion is 60 mil-
lion dollars a year.

Clawson Church Buys Lots
For Future Expansion Goal
CLAWSON, Mich. — The
church of Christ, 456 E. 14 Mile
Road in Clawson, recently pur-
chased the two houses and lots
just east of their building on 14
Mile Road for a cost of 123,000.
The property is 150 feet deep,
and with the new purchase the
church now owns a total 400
foot frontage on 14 Mile Road.
The purpose of the purchase is
a preparatory step in their
future expansion program.
After an absence of 10 years,
R. C. Oliver returned to work
with the Clawson church on the
first Sunday in July, 1962. The
purchase of the property was
the last accomplishment in Oli-
ver’s first year with the church.
Other indications of growth
and progress during his first
year with them consists of a
stable contribution, consistent
attendance, a restoration of good
will between the Clawson and
the North Madison Heights con-
gregation, and 28 additions to
their membership, consisting of
18 baptisms, seven transfers of
membership, and three restora-
tions.
Oliver R. Bunting, the preach-
er at Shelby, suggests that with
this type of co-operation and
assistance, every small con-
gregation in a given area, by
staggering the dates, could have
a successful VBS. “It’s a won-
derful opportunity,” he explain-
ed, “To teach the truth to our
friends and neighbors.”
One young man from a neigh-
boring denomination told his
teacher, "I have learned more
from the Bible in this vacation
Bible school than from any I
have attended before.”
From the experience gained,
the brethren, along with other
workers from Missouri, hope to
do greater things for the Lord
at Traverse City, Michigan next
year.
Success of Shelby VBS Work
SHELBY, Mich.—The little ’ - -
community on the West Mich-
igan shore of Lake Michigan
recently concluded a vacation
Bible school that had a high
attendance of 98 persons. The
VBS was in the first week of
August.
The 98 figure was reached
despite a late cherry harvest
in the area and swimming les-
sons being held in the local
recreation program.
Assisting in the teaching pro-
gram were Edgar and Arvella
Bruce of Bad Axe and Glenn
and Jean Hannah of Ludington.
Jim Bruce, assisted by his
younger brother, Gary, was the
song leader.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. —
Forty - three people from Mich-
igan worked hard in the recent
campaign for Christ in Leban-
on, Missouri. (This number was
net all present for the whole
time, however). From July 7-
20, these Christians worked con-
genially in door to door can-
vassing, Vacation Bible School
and a gospel meeting.
Just going to encourage them
in their work helped the little
band of Christians at Sixth and
Washington Streets. They had
laid a good foundation on which
to build and had converted an
old supermarket into an at-
tractive, air - conditioned meet-
ing place.
Now, the brethren there, un-
der the leadership of Arthur
Hicks, local minister, and
George Triplett, college student
from Springfield, Mo., are work-
ing hard on the 50 to 100 con-
tacts made “’ during the cam-
paign. Already one young couple
has been baptized, as a result
