uie Frapco-Prussiaa war, the French army sang the Mar-
seillaise and the German army sang this great nymn of Mar
Un Luther—and marched to conquest mat day. The inkerip-
Uon on Luther's monument in Wittenberg is the lira I line
of thia hymn: "A mighty fortress is our God." Thia very
hymn waa Luther's solace in his times of greatest peril.

Mclanchthon, “Come Philip, let us sing the forty-sixth
Psalm"—which is this hymn In verse.
This la Luther s greatest hymn, and is known as '"The
Marseillaise of the Reformation." It is his version of "God
is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in trou-
ble." An authority on German hymns aays that Luther was
the greatest of the Gunian nymnlsts. He began to write
hynms in 1528, tuid continued to do so for twenty years.
He had such a high regard for quality that he wrote but
one a year. His flnst German hymn book appeared in 1624.
Il contained only eight hymns and four of them were by
Luther. In the Reformation, the Catholic world exclaimed:
