beard what I have to say.”
Millicent glanced up appreben
slvely.
The diamond hard, gray eyes of
Cynthia Happ were boring steadily
Into hers.
“Close the door." Cynthia Happ
said, “and don’t let anyone leave
this room."
(To Re Continued)
Jarvis Bapp’s tone was lefty for
mat. “1 can assure you. Buchanan."
he said, “that 1 am not In the least
Interested In the usual etlquet np
plying to chauffeurs, or the custom
ary relationships between chaut
feurs and employers. 1 manage my
affairs for my own convenience.”
“Well, wove got to Investigate
tills thing.” Buchanan said, "and
that’s one of the funny facts."
"There certainly Is nothing
funny about It." Jarvis Happ re
marked savagely.
"Well, call It queer If you warn
to. There are lots of queer things
about this murder For Instance
why should Harry Folding have
thrown those car keys Imo the pool
below the fountain?’
“You haven't any reason for be
Hoving that he did," Happ pointed
out, "except that someone has sent
you an unsigned typewritten docu
meflj."
"Oh yes, wo have," the detective
said.
He pushed his hand down Into his
coat pocket, brought out the water
soaked leather key container, and
slapped it down on Jarvis Happ’s
desk.
"We drained the pool," he said
"That's what we found In the bot-
tom of IL"
the person who did have them
realized that It would be most In-
criminating to be found with those
keys, since the mere possession of
the keys ties some person up vith
the surreptitious operation ot
Robert Catses automotjlle. That
means that some member of this
household was out at a late hour
last night, and It Is only reasonable
to suppose that such a secret noc-
turnal excursion was connected in
some way either with the death ot
Harry Folding or the events which
led up to It."
■ u V VUIJ wuj lllUl w V svuuw
Robert Calse left those keys In the
automobile," Jarvis Happ said
slowly, "Is that Robert, himself,
says so. On the other hand. Isn't It
equally logical to believe that he
was out Inst night, didn't want
anyone to know this nnd, therefore,
shrouded his absence In secrecy?
Unfortunately, he ran out ot gas
He ran out of gas at a time when
ho couldn’t readily replenish IL
Therefore It became necessary for
him to leave his automobile by the
curb. Under those circumstances,
nothing Is more logical than that
he would have returned and tried
to cover up the fact that he had
been out In his own automobile by
pretending he left the keys In his
enr and then hiding the keys some
where, such ns In the pool.
“Having done that, be would
want the pollco to find the keys—
first, because he would want the
keys back, secondly, because he
would want the police to find them
In some place where they had v< ry
evidently been concealed by
one who was trying to cover
the theft ot the keys."
Buchanan stared steadily
Jarvis Happ.
"Sold!" he exclaimed at length
"That’s damned good logic. You
get Boh Calse up here and I'm go-
ing to turn him wrong side out."
Jarvis Hnpp rearhed for the tele-
phone on his desk and said. "I'll
communicate with the butler.
He . . ."
"Just one moment, please," said
Cynthia Happ’s well modulated
voice. "1 happen to have
standing In the doorway.
OUCH A NAN suddenly dropped
U his attitude of hostility.
"We still ain't getting anywhere.
Mr. Happ.” he said "because the
person who tossed those keys Into
the pool dfd It to conceal them.
Such a person would never have
written n note telling where they
were. Therefore, the person who
wrote the note wasn't the person
that chucked the keys In. That
means that some other person knew
those keys were thrown tn. So It
you're going to figure two people
In on It. you might just as well ttg
ure finery Feldlng was the one
who threw them In. as to figure
that some other person was."
Jarvis Happ nodded his head
.slowly, nnd said. "That, ot course.
Is true If the possession of those
keys was wrongful."
"What do you mean?”
"The only way that we
IARVIS HAPP stared at the water
•' sonked key container without
emot Ion.
"I still say," Jarvis Happ re-
marked, "that you have no evidence
whatever that Harry Folding put
those keys In the pool. On the other
hand, you have every evidence that
he did not."
"What do you mean wove got
overy evidence that lie didn't?"
Jarvis Hnpp sighed after the man
ner ot a pattent teacher explaining
something to a rather dull school
hoy.
"The note.” he said, "was dellv
ered to you. It was written for the
purpose of enabling you to tlud the
missing keys. You didn't enter
upon the scene until after Harry
Folding had been murdered. Nat
tirally, therefore, the note was writ-
ten after Feldljjg’s murder. A dead
man doesn't write letters on a type
writer, even if ho does have access
to the room where the typewriter
Is kept.
"Now, on the other hand, some
one knew those keys were In the
pool. Logically, the only person
who would know this was the per
son who threw the keys there. Cer-
tainly It Harry Fehling had re
turned home In the darkness and
tossed those keys surreptitiously
Into the pool ho would have been
the only one who knew about It.
The fact that this note was writ-
ten Is proof that some living person
knew of the hiding place ot those
keys, nnd ts almost positive Indica-
tion that this person put them
there."
"Why?"
“If Harry Feldlng had those
keys." Jarvis Happ said, “the per-
son who secured possession ot them
must have taken them from Harry
Feldlng. They couldn't have takbn
them from him while he was alive
wl'hout a tight, unless tt bad been
some person tn whom Feldlng had
confidence. If such a person took
the keys from Folding after hls
death, that person must have been
instrumental in bringing about hls
death, or else must have discovered
hls body without reporting it to
the police.

himself, did not have those keya,i
