Childless couples predominate in
the divorce court*.
These are eome of the findings
of District Judge Kenneth McCal-
la. based on an analytical study of
1800 divorce caeee beard in his
court.
"I am convinced that it is too
easy to get married tn Texas." the
judge said when making his find-
ings public. "Right now it is even
worse than usual with so many
soldiers entering wedlock Many of
them are cimply marriage of con-
venicncs.**
Hk figure* show that in 43 per
cent of divorce* granted in hi*
court the couple had known each
other less than six months and in
71 per cent th* acquaintance had
been lees than a year. Approximate-
ly one third of the betrothals are
of lea* than a month's duration

this month or early June. Thoee
asking the same amount or leee oil
than last season will get their re-
quests filled promptly, Brown has
indicated.
Persons asking more will get a
basic ration so they can fill up their
tank*, and then ration boards are
to take time to consider whether to
grant the extra amount.
In the case of thoee whose rations

Parents of boy* under military
age have been doing a deal of
thu king along that line lately. De-
spite the fact that their children
maj not be called for duty in the
present conflict, they have reached
the conclusion that they don’t want
their lads to have to go into some
tuture war without thorough train-
ing
Many parents are figuring on
sending their young hopefuls to
military academies as soon a* they

schooling With this education a
young man would come up to his
compulsory millttary service with
a good background
Need Preparation
That doesn’t represent the ru-

own. and I’ve seen plenty of war
at first hand I hate the bloody
business but believe the common-

A generation ago compulsory mili-

we didn’t need it. because we were
safe behind our ocean barriers But
things have changed

after which they are In the reserve

Escorted by Spitfires, the Kitty-

pressed into service in a desperate
effort to get supplies to ita Tunis-

Democrats Ask
Tax Plan Support
WASHINGTON. May !.'-<*>-
In formal reports, the Some ways
and means committee's Democratic
majority called upon Congress to-
day to support its compromise pay-
as-you-go tax plan while the Re-
publican minority pressed anew for
passage of the Rumi eklp-a-year
alternative.”
The Democrats called the Rumi
plan "unfair, a gross violation of
the principle of ability to pay,”
while the minority countered with
an assertion that the opposition
compromise was “a step child of
political pressure” and “a con-
gJonmr*tk>n of stubborn diner-
“Under the committee bill.” said
the Democrats, “there will be no
doubling up for more than seven
million new taxpayers, and the old
taxpayer* while forced to undergo
some doubling up will receive sub-
stantial reduction of their 1943 tax."
The Rumi plan, said Uie Repub-
licans. “is the outgrowth of reason
and common sense. It is as sound as
it is simple. It meets the need for
putting the Income tax system on
a genuine ability to pay basis by
gearing current tax payments to
current Income, thereby relieving
all taxpayers of any overhanging
income tax debt.
The two reports were filed only
a few day* after the administra-
tion. through Treasury Secretary
Morgenthau threw it* weight behind
the compromise version, designed
to cancel approximately 44 per
cent of last year's individual tax ob-
ligations
