Seminary Shabbat March 18-19
Jeremy Gerber
I.
■ BY students attend Blue Bridge program
Every year, Beth Yeshurun is proud to host a rab-
binical student from the Jewish Theological Seminary
to present him or her with a chance to spend Shabbat
in a synagogue and stand in front of a congregation
(often for the first time) to talk about their experiences.
This year, Jeremy Gerber will speak during our Friday,
March 18, Sanctuary Service and various Shabbat
Morning Services on Saturday, March 19.
Jeremy is a first-year rabbinical student at the JTS.
He also received his undergraduate degree at the Semi-
nary in a Joint Program with Columbia University. Jer-
emy majored in Talmud and Rabbinics at the JTS and
Anthropology at Columbia. He grew up in Stockholm,
Sweden, where his father is the Cantor in the Great
Synagogue of Stockholm. Last year, Jeremy worked for
the Masorti movement in England, where he helped
university students, the youth movement, NOAM and
several Masorti communities around London.

■Rabbi Strauss on PBS panel on forgiveness
Rabbi Brian Strauss has been chosen to
represent the Jewish view of forgiveness on
an upcoming episode of Houston PBS’ The
Connection. Rabbi Strauss will be part of a
panel discussion with three other clergy mem-
bers of different faiths.
The program will air on Friday, March 25,
at 8:00 p.m. and be re-broadcast on Sunday,
March 27, at 5:00 p.m.
Fifth-graders from Beth Yeshurun Day School and sixth-grad-
ers from The Emery/Weiner School joined with students from Al-
Hadi School to participate in “Blue Bridge,” a pilot program de-
signed to bring together Jewish and Muslim children.
The students participated in a full-day prejudice awareness
program that focused on issues of self-esteem, respect for diversity
and anti-bias behavior. Organized by the Houston Police Depart-
ment in conjunction with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Jew-
ish Federation of Greater Houston and Holocaust Museum Hous-
ton, the program was held at the Houston Police Academy and gave
students an opportunity to interact with police officers.
The day’s program in-
cluded several activities and
sessions. One activity had the
Jewish and Muslim students
facing one another in parallel
lines so that they could ask
questions of their partner. Af-
ter a few minutes, the stu-
dents would rotate and pair
up with a new student to continue the process. “I learned many
things about the children I met,” said Beth Yeshurun student Karin
Abraham. “I learned that they do the same things we do like going
on the computer, watching TV, reading and playing sports.”
“Blue Bridge” organizers hope to build upon the success of
this pilot program and expand to include sessions with Asian, His-
panic and African-American children. With each session, the orga-
nizers hope to bridge communities, show commonalities and forge
new friendships.
■ Rabbi Rosen to be honored by Hadassah
The Houston Chapter of Hadassah will
honor our very own Rabbi David Rosen for his
steadfast dedication to Hadassah at their An-
nual Associates Event. Rabbi Rosen spurred
the purchase of a special microscope that helps
Hadassah Hospital’s doctors locate minute par-
ticles of shrapnel in the victims of bombings.
Along with the Jewish Federation of Greater
Houston and the Houston Chapter of
Hadassah, Rabbi Rosen’s outstanding efforts raised $100,000 to
purchase this vital equipment. Yasher Koach and Todah Rabah!
Hadassah members will also be learning about the amazing and
controversial topic of stem cell research from Dr. James Willerson,
President of the UT Health Science Center.
The event, a dessert reception, will take place at the home of
Linda and Nelson Block (5023 Braesheather Drive) on Sunday, April
3, at 7:00 p.m.
Making one of the men in your life an Associate - your hus-
band, son, nephew, grandson or partner - is a great way to honor
them and honor our wonderful Rabbi! They will join an incredible
roster of Associates including Rabbi Rosen, a third-generation
Hadassah member (Associate). Associate membership is a one-time
payment of only $200.
For more information about Associate membership or the event,
please call Associates co-Chairs Ann Baker Ronn at (713) 626-9820
or Marcie Baker Turrin at (713) 864-5953. RSVP’s should be made to
the Hadassah office at (713) 661-1022 by March 28.
