When Toby and
Lester moved to
Houston 12 years
ago, it made their
children, Rabbi David
& Marcie Rosen, very
happy and proved to
be a valuable addition
to our synagogue.
Lester and Toby have
Lester & Toby Rosen endeared themselves
to so many of us. They recently took time from their many
volunteer duties to enjoy their 60th wedding anniversary.
Having their names placed on a Simcha Tree leaf by their
children David, Marcie, Cindy and Rick was most meaningful
to them and added to their joyous celebration.
Lester and Toby met when she was a student at the University
of Texas and he was employed by Kabro Womens Clothing
Manufacturer. They met through her sister, Barbara Piller, who,
with her husband Willard Piller, decided these two would be a
perfect couple. And so it was. Lester and Toby married several
months later after having a first date sharing Yom Kippur services.
(Lester said it was the cheapest date he ever had!) Rabbi William
Malev married them in Fort Worth, TX. They lived in Houston
the first 15 years of their marriage with their three young children
David, Cindy and Rick. Then they moved to Dallas where Lester
started his own womens and childrens clothing manufacturing
business. Thirty-two years in Dallas kept them busy, he in
business receiving honors and awards from designers and other
professional groups, and Toby working with Macy's, advisor to
B'nai Brith Girls, Shearith Israel Sisterhood and Hadassah.
Since returning to Houston, they have become leaders of
the YES Senior Group at Beth Yeshurun for the past 12 years,
volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels and SCORE (Senior Corps of
Retired Executives), serve as Yom Limmud Chairs and make
weekly visits to MD Anderson Hospital to meet with patients and
their families. Also at MD Anderson, they co-chair the annual
Christmas lunch for the patients and their relatives. (Over 400
attended the past lunch!) Congregation Beth Yeshurun honored
Lester as Chatain Brasheet, which is the first Torah reading of
the year, for his outstanding work on behalf of our community.
Lester also served as Chairman of the JCC Building Campaign
at its original location. Both Lester and Toby, with their children
Rabbi David and Marcie, were the recipients of the Ben Gurion
University of the Negev 2006 Leadership award.
We wish this wonderful couple a very happy 60th
anniversary and may life continue to make them the successful
couple they are now.
