I was driving by the park in
Plainview last week and saw a
family enjoying a picnic. They
had quite a spread of Kentucky
Fried Chicken laid out on the ta-
ble.
It brought to mind the picnics
we had when I was growing
up. About once a summer my
Mother’s family got together,
which included Mother, Daddy,
us three girls, aunts, uncles and
cousins. We would all meet at
Thompson Park in Amarillo for
the day. There was great play-
ground equipment for us kids
to climb on. I can remember the
swings were really tall, and there
was a slide for the smaller kids,
but there was a huge one for us
older ones. I am sure if I went
back today, none of this would
seem near as big as I remember,
even if it happened to still be
there.
The grown ups would find the
perfect spot to set up for the day.
They would choose a place with
big trees for shade and a picnic
on it. The ice cream was ready
plastic when it was almost impossi-
ble to turn the crank anymore.
To a kid, it seemed that it took
hours for it to get ready, but in
the long run, it was well worth it
when the towels were laid aside,
the crank taken off the wooden
bucket, and the top of the metal
container removed to reveal the
finished product. Nothing could
compare to the anticipation of
having some spooned into your
bowl. There wasn’t anything bet-
ter than to a bowl of homemade
ice cream on a hot summer day.
A day at the park was special
for all of us. Back then we didn’t
go nearly as much as we do these
days, so any day out of the ordi-
nary seemed to be an adventure.
I can remember how exciting it
was to load up the trunk of the
car that morning with the coolers.
One had the food in it, while the
other contained bottles of Cokes
surrounded with ice. Quilts and a
couple of pillows were loaded in
the back seat with us kids. Back
then it was always home made
quilts, no blankets. Quilts were
utilitarian, not just displayed as
today.
I am sure the kids of today will
have great memories, but I can’t
imagine they could ever be as
special as a picnic day at Thomp-
son Park.
