though that I think we all could
use.
Stomach bugs are a virus that
must run their course. You start
off not feeling well, then it pro-
gresses to all sorts of horrible ac-
tivities, and then ends with you
basically not feeling well again.
The process is the worst and I
think the same thing can be said
about grief.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if
grief showed up and then after
a few painful days it just disap-
peared? ft is the process of griev-
ing which is so hard and unlike
the stomach bug the course will
continue forever. We may feel
bad one week, a little better the
next month, and then something
happens so the process starts all
over again. We feel better but we
never ever feel the same.
Holidays are a horrible time
in which grief is more a reali-
ty than a possibility. Many are
experiencing their first holiday
or family gathering without the
deceased. Plans that were made
a year ago are adjusted because
now we have an empty seat and
things are just not like they were.
In fact the funeral home is al-
ready full simply because people
live to markers or their disease
has finally taken its toll. From
the time the weather changes
until the holidays are over, we
will be seeing grieving families.
I have learned that death also
runs its course; it usually comes
in threes.
I want to encourage those who
are grieving to remember the
deceased, but try to focus on the
positive not the empty seat. Tell
stories and laugh, fix favorite
foods, and spend time with those
you love. For those who know
these families, remember to tell
them how they are being thought
about and prayed over. Listen if
they want to share because often
the best medicine for any pain is
a heart that pauses to hear anoth-
er’s story. As a community our
most precious responsibility is
to hold those close who are hurt-
ing the most. If we build up this
wall of support then healing will
occur.
Well, we have faced a battle
and we won. The stomach bug
came to our house and made the
rounds. In fact it hit all the kids,
one grandbaby, and myself with
its fury. In the mayhem that fol-
lowed its arrival, I was the only
one who could still function
while it was making its rounds.
I was reminded of something December 16th in the High School Auditorium.
