Missed Accustomed Noise
Along the Irish coast are light-
houses which fire a signal gun at
three-minute Intervals during .foggy
weather. To a visitor the noise is
irritating and unbearable, making
sleep an impossibility; but to the
seasoned lighthousekeeper not only
does the monotonous boom pass un-
noticed, but a break in its regularity
reacts as a disturbance.
An old Irishman of long service
slept soundly and peacefully during
a winter night while his wife fired
the roaring three-minute signals—
that is, be rested comfortably until
by some shortcoming one of the
charges failed to explode.
Instantly he awoke, sat up, gazed
wildly around, and shouted, “Mag-
gie! What the deuce was that?”

Coca-Chewing Evil Habit
The chief vice of the Indians and
half-breeds of Bolivia is chewing
coca. A man who has the habit can
always be detected by the Immense
lump in his cheek. The general ef-
fect of the drug is to dull the
nerves and stiffen the resistance to
fatigue. Under its influence natives
can endure great hardships and
phytical strain. Many of them will
work for days at a time on nothing
except coca leaves, which they be-
gin to chew at breakfast time and
continue to chew throughout the
I day. As with all narcotics, the per-
sistent use of coca wrecks the nerv-
ous system and dulls the intellect.

The late Joaeph Maas, the famous
during a visit to the United
J some years ago, was very
of hunting the buffalo on tha
prairies.
When engaged in this sport on
one occasion with his friend, Boucl-
they were suddenly attacked by ,a
number ot Indians In the dusk of
the evening, while far from their
encampment. Bound hand and foot,
the captives were dragged to the
Indians’ halting place, where a fire
was mg«e. While .awaiting their
fate, fearing that that night wohld
be their last, Beudqiult said to Us
friend: “Joe, sing for me.” Mtos,
who had never sung in guch terrible
rircwnstancefi, tearhffly compiled
with his friend's request, and began
to sing some old favorites,. recalls

Chinaman Sails Junk
in His Own Fashion
The oldest seagoing vessels of the
world are the junks pf the Yellow
sea of China. These junks are
“highly decorated vessels, rith
poopg and rounded sides, reminis-
cent of the days of Drake and Co-
lumbus.”
“Junks ot this type ace in ex-
istence still which were built in the
time ot Elen Luqg, say some 150
years ago," days the London Yacht-
ing Monthly.
“A junk will not heave to, and
John Chinaman is fully awajre of
this. He doesn’t even try; his plan
is far simpler. He lets bls hal-
yards jgo with a run, and the gall
is off his vessel in a moment. The
high poop acts as a siding mizzen
and brings him head todgind; the
low bow prevents him fkom falling
off the wind.
“It the blow Is likely .to lafft any
time, he lays out a sea anchor. HU
next procedure is to bum g joss
stick and probably a few pieces of
paper to his household .god. After
that, as there is nothing more to
do except eat and sleep—he does
so.”
Kept Up in England
Many strange and curious rites
and customs have long been con-
nected with the observance of ■
Twelfth night. Twelfth night is ■
the evening before Epiphany, the *
8th of January, also called Twelfth- f
tide and Old Christmas day. •
tn England the principal rite of J*
the’ evening is the cutting of the ■
“bean cake”—a cake in which a F
bean Is cooked, the finder of which ■
is made the king of tha nigbt and ■
the following day.
It was in commemoration of this
custom that Robert Baddely an
English comedian of the Eighteenth
century, who was long a favorite at
the Drury Lane theater, made one
of the strangest bequests on record.
Baddely died la 1794, and in hi*
will he bequeathed his cottage to a
theatrical fund, requesting that a
sum of three pounds be annually
expended on a cakb, to be cut on
Twelfth night, In the Green room of
the Drury Lane theater, and divided
among the actors and actresses.

the free Will of the Maltese, in 1814
by the treaty of Parte. It has an
elected legislature, but there
certain reserved matters, such as
war, treaties, foreign trade, etc.,
which ate dealt with by the gov-
ernor and executive council. Ex-
ports include potatoes and other
vegetables, oranges, cumin seed,
goats and sheep, cotton goods and
stone. The distance of Malta from
New York is about 4^800 miles. This
mp of islands is situated in the

Sicily, 140 miles from the European
Mainland and 180 mikes from Africa.
It has a magnificent harbor at Val-

coaling station and center of Medi-
terranean commerce. It is ] w
land’s premier naval station in that
sea.

River uRaftd* Nuisances
One of the most remarkable of
the Mississippi rafts began forming
in the Atchafalaya, a lower arm of
the river, in 1778. By 1818 It had
become 10 miles long, more than 800
feet in width, about eight feet deep,
and had become solid enough to
support a growth of troea, some <
which were 00 feet in htteht Fbtol-

years.
