waters of the Amazon, heretofore
shrouded in mystery, are gradu-
ally hcinc penetrated as one of
civilization's last frontiers, Dr.
George M. McBride, professor of
geography on the Los Angt-bs
cmpaus of the University of Cal-
ifornia, reveals.
Dr. McBride, who served In
Peru for n.arly two years as
United States representative on
the international commission de-
termining the boundary between
Ecuador and Peru, said that at
least five roads have b?en driven
over the Andes Into the tropical
forests of the Amazon headwaters.
"Rubber and other goods are
being taken out of various regions
of the Amazon by plane," Dr.
McBride said, "and It is to be
expected that barbasco, quinine,
and other such concentrated pro-
ducts or high value will find their
most economical outlet by air
transportation and by co-ordit.ated
systems of air, land and water-
ways."
He said that air transport con-
nects the most important inland
"ettlemcnts with the coast, and
that much of this area, still mark-
ed "unexplored" on maps, is be-
ing charted.
