Few country papers equal the quantity and quality of service given its
readers every week by The News, and still less of them have an equipment
that anywhere approaches the completeness of The News office. But it
takes this class of office and this class of work to produce the kind of paper
which the owner is willing to place before the public and ask their patron-
age for, and which has enabled us to build up and keep up a subscription
list that covers the territory tributary to Decatur, and brings its adver-
tising patrons gratifying returns.

A short time ago The News printed a picture and gave a description of
its big linotype machine. Ihis week it presents a picture of the big
on which The News is printed every week.
This press is manufactured by the Walter Scott Printing Press Com-
pany, Plainfield, N. J., one of the largest press manufacturing companies
in the United States. It is one of their high class machines, built to print
anything from a newspaper to the highest class of book and catalogue
work. Owing to its expensiveness it is a rare thing to see one of them in a
small city office. But The News, when it had to buy a larger machine, de-
cided that the best was the cheapest. To replace this press at present
prices would require an outlay of about $6,000.00. So you see, The News
is sparing neither money or time to give its readers one of the best printed,
as well as one of the newsiest and best county papers in north Texas.
To a lover of good machinery it is a real pleasure to see this big ma-
chine operate. It is practically noiseless and runs with a pleasant hum that
is soothing to the ear. It takes the large sheets from the upper board,
which is called the feed boatd, winds them around the cylinder and as this
cylinder revolves, another part of the press called the bed, and which con-
tains the forms of type, passes under it, and the sheet of paper which is
now between the cylinder and type is printed, carried on through the ma-
chine and deposited in a neat pile on the receiving board at the end of the
press. This work progresses rapidly; fro» 1500 to 2000 sheets an hour
can be printed so that in a short time the large edition of The News can be
printed and made ready for the mails.
