•opal eln^’h said that prohibition was a failure, iiijsiaiit-

’d up by Bishop Manning’s statement qf last iSundav.

“Undue importance,’’ he said, “has been attached
to the statement of the society because it has no offi-
cial aiulioriz.ilion and no right whatever to speak in
the naihe of the Episcopal church.
“It Ls a voluntary association, and its statements
have obly sucl^ weight as may attach to those of any
vohmU jy organization. They are not to be takeii as
representing the mind of the Episcopal church. For
some ysars the church has scarcely been aware of the
existence of t his society and it has not been regarded
as haviing weight and influence in the church.
