92-year-old WWII veteran attacked trying
to defend US flag
KAUFMAN,Texas (AP)— A 92-year-old Marine veteran has
been injured while trying to defend the U.S. flag outside his
Texas home.
Howard Banks fought in World War II and was left legally
blind by a flare on Iwo Jima.
After hearing noises outside his Dallas-area home earlier this
month, Banks says he went outside and found someone trying
to pull his flag down from its pole. The would-be thief knocked
him down before running off, and neighbors rushed to help.
Banks was left with bumps, bruises and a twisted knee.
Police are investigating.
Meanwhile, fellow Marine veterans from Honor Flight Austin
visited Banks at his home Sunday and offered him a free trip to
Washington, D.C. to express their appreciation for his service.

Texas sales tax holiday weekend
scheduled for Aug. 11-13
AUSTIN,Texas (AP) — The annual Texas sales tax holiday will
be the second weekend in August as children prepare to return
to school.
The Texas comptroller's office says the tax-free weekend, for
a number of school-related items, will be Aug. 11-13.
The Texas law exempts most clothing, footwear, school
supplies and backpacks priced less than $100 from salesand
use taxes. That could save buyers about $8 on every $100 spent.
The sales tax exemption for Texas also includes items sold
online, or by telephone or mail. Shoppers can use layaway plans
to get the tax break.
There are exceptions. For example, the sales tax holiday does
not apply to jewelry, handbags, purses, briefcases, luggage,
umbrellas, wallets, watches and similar items.
The Texas tax break weekend has been an annual event since
1999.
