END 1997, AND WELCOME 1998, IN PRAYER
If you do not have Watch Night on your calendar, add it. Wednesday, December 31, you
absolutely must schedule worship at midnight—even if you have to leave that killer party
to spend the final twenty or thirty minutes of 1997 in church, and go back after midnight.
The whole of Watch Night at Wheeler is four hours of (1) eating; (2) fun and fellowship
for children, young people, and adults; and (3) year-end worship and praise from 11:00 to
midnight See page 8 for details on Watch Night. Note the form at the bottom, asking for
volunteers to help with preparation for, execution of, and cleanup after, Watch Night.
Make yourself available to Tishauna Washington and her teammates.
COUNTDOWN TO OVERFLOW OF BLESSINGS
Have you begun to re-prioritizing your budget so you can begin 1998 as a tither? In the
next ten days work it out. Call the church and ask for help if you want to know how to
handle bills that exceed income. But try to order your life so that God can keep His
promise to open the windows of Heaven and pour out uncontainable blessings upon tithers
(Malachi 3:10). That will be a happy new year!
WELCOME, DR. FRED LUCAS
A very special guest joins us today. He is the Reverend Dr. Fred Lucas, an AME minister,
and President of New York’s Faith Center for Community Development. Dr. Lucas is
first and foremost a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ. But he is also guru to banks
and government on supporting churches and faith-based CDC’s in the new ministry of
neighborhood revitalization as an extension of the witness of Christ. See page 3 for more
detail on Dr. Lucas. Immediately following this service, Dr. Lucas will share some
insights in community development with local leaders of non-profits.
WE BIFURCATED REAL GOOD
Last Sunday was one of those extremely rare instances of Wheeler bifurcation (to divide
into two branches). Part of us was in San Antonio, helping Second Baptist Church to
celebrate their 118th anniversary. It was a great experience, and the Voices of Unity
represented Wheeler fabulously. The rest of us worshipped here on campus, led by Revs.
Glenn Gray and Warren Williams. The word is, you had real “chu’ch.” Thanks to these
two faithful teammates, to the leadership of our Deacon board, and to the support teams
who keep the machine purring even when the pastor is playing hookey. We even heard
that the guest theologians were well entertained and left some valuable nuggets of wisdom
with us. Praise God for a church that is faithful in season and out of season!
Church Offices Closed December 25th in observance of Christmas
