George Cukor swd. "Hollywood will
he the firot to take advantage of
the great and peedy facilities for
travel opening to the public.
"Pirtores whose loeaies are in
itaiy will be fihwetl in Italy and
not in Santa Monica. Those of Spain
will be made in Spain. 1 expect
well even be taking our movie (
stairs and grease paint over to the
South Sea islands."
Cukor has Just returned from
filming exterior scenes for Greer
Carson's new starring film. "Sa-
cred and Profane," against the
scenic background of the Monterey
Peninsula. That's a substitute for
the Brittany coastline, where the
story really takes place.
"Two years from now," Cukor t
said, "we would have been filming j
those scenes in Brittany. We would
have packed the whole company
into one plane, ait the equipment
into another and landed on the
other side of the world in i-l hours
or so."
Even with today's old-fashioned
transportation, however, distance
lends little difficulty. For instance,
Cukor needed Robert Mitchum for
a few scenes while he was working
at M-G-M—IWS miles to the south
—in another film.
"Boh worked down in Hollywood
until six one evening. Then they I
piled him on a plane. He was in
Monterey in two hours. We used
him for a couple of hours in the
morning, then sent him back, and
he ate lunch in the M-G-M com-
missary that same day. He was
bock in front of the cameras by
four that afternoon.
**A miracle a few years ago, hut
it's routine now."
Like the Arabian Xights unit its
magic carpet, Hollywood's out to
