LOS ANGELES. — Electronic
X.-rays and light-scattering devices
which measure things between
t-a,300(000ths ami t-25,000.000ths
of an inch in size may be used to
discover the "structure and action
of nerve and brain tissues."
Dr. Linus Pauling, chairman of
the California Institute of Tech-
nology^ division of chemistry and
chemical engineering, has reveal-
ed new discoveries in this field.
They may fathom, Pauling said,
such mysteries as the nature of
the process of growth; how vi-
ruses, genes and cells duplicate;
the action of Anxymes (ferment-
ing) and the mechanism of hor-
mones and vitamins.
Dr. Paulding's expedition into
the "ilark forest of dimensional
unknowns" already has resulted in
determining the structure of four
substances in the protein field.
Proteins, he claims, hold the
key to the whole subject of the
molecular basis of biological re-
action.
Tu simplify his experiments, L>r
Pauling has compared his task tu

B OF THE UNITED STATES I
Herman D Bandy
No. 7767 Breckenridge
that of an exploration of the plan-
et Earth by a super-being 250,-
1100,000 times larger thau a man.
The present unit of molecular
measurement is the angstrom
unit, a linear "sliver" about
t-250,000,000ths of an inch.
New York Would Be Spot
Suppose Dr. Pauling focused
his attention on New York City.
"The metropolis would appear!
as a spot about ULOOths of anj
inch in diameter—barely visible;
to the naked eye, but by chemicul
; methods ami difraction of X-rays;
and electron waves the observer 1
•ould know, although he actually,
could not see. that the city con-'
tained streetcars, ships, and peo-i
pie." ■
The electronic microscope, Dr.
Pauling said, would tell him with- I
in 10 feet the shape of the Em-'
pire State building. |
"But," says Dr. Pauling, "every-!
his 10-foot size would remain iu I
the category of the unknown for
the superman. So relatively on a
scale 2!>0,000,000 times smaller, I
there is a 'dark forest' in human I
knowledge which we hope to
pierce." L
By beaming difracted light upon |
-iinpie molecules, scientists have |
"f o r in u 1 a t e d generalisations" 1
about atomic radii, shapes and
certain "features of molecular j
■onfiguration." Now they are seek- 1
'tig to apply their methods—held I
back by the war years—to the |
-huly of the protein structure. '
