surveyed said they had tried alco-
hol, down from 41.8 percent in
1990. The number of elementary
students who had tried tobacco
dropped to 16.3 percent in 1998
from 21.1 percent in 1990.

The red ribbon was adopted as a
symbol of the movement in honor
of Enrique Camarena, an agent
with the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration kidnapped and
killed while investigating drug traf-
fickers. The campaign has reached
millions of U.S. children and has
been recognized by the U.S.
Congress.
"Red Ribbon Week is a chance to
be visible and vocal in our desire
for a drug-free community," stu-
dent council sponsor Melanie
Parker said. "We know that chil-
dren are less likely to use alcohol
and other drugs when parents and
other role models are clear and con-
sistent in their opposition to alcohol
and drug abuse. That's why the stu-
dent council is proud to support
Red Ribbon Week."
