LOCAL FORECAST.
Forecast for Galveston and Vicinity:
Tonight and Saturday, partly cloudy
weather; light to fresh southerly winds.
Right on the heels of a story published
in the New York Herald of recent date
concerning the extensive system of rob-
bery of which the Morgan line of steam-
ships has been the victim in that city,
there came the rumor that the losses to
which the transportation line had been
subjected of late were not confined alto-
gether to the metropolis and that the Gal-
veston end of the line was not free from
suspicion.
A quiet investigation was undertaken
by a member of the Tribune staff and
quite a number of facts were unearthed
in which it developed that while nothing
like the scientific depredations carried on
in New York were discovered here, it ap-
pears that the Galveston end has been
successfully and profitably worked by a
gang which some months since smelled
an investigation coming and got safely
away before an opportunity for making
arrests could be brought about.
Ii was learned that during last winter
this gang did the most of its work, and
so wise were they that the company’s de-
tectives were completely baffled in their
endeavors to run them to earth. The
thieves, it later developed, were all extra
men, strangers who had drifted in here
from other places. No suspicion had ever
attached to the regular men, for many
and ample had been the opportunities of
testing their honesty.
Just to what extent the stealing has
been carried on here is not fully known,
but it is asserted that there are several
instances where goods have disappeared
and were checked up short at their desti-
nation.

New York,' May 25.—The Times today
■ays:
Samuel Lunderman, one of the most ex-
pert ot the Park Row pullers-in for the
retail dry goods business, learned some
things about the federal law yesterday.
Recently he “plied in” Private R. H.
Cusick of company G, Fifth U. S. in-
fantry, and induced him to dispose of his
uniform, receiving in exchange a second-
hand suit of civilian’s clothes.
The clothes deal between the United
States and Park Row was reported to a
United States marshal, however, and yes-
terday the puller-in was arrested. Judge
Thomas in the United States district court
yesterday broke the news to Mr. Lunder-
man that a law was in existence impos-
ing a fine of $1000 on any one introducing
the uniform into the. second-hand business.
His employer paid, the fine,.

The atmospheric pressure is generally
below the normal over all districts, ex-
cept middle Atlantic states. The disturb-
ance over Florida has apparently contin-
ued stationary and seems to be diminish-
ing iti energy. The Colorado disturbance
has moved slowly eastward and is now
central over western Kansas and Nebras-
ka. A third disturbance has appeared
over north Pacific states. Showers have
been general in east Gulf and south At-
lantic states and from the Mississippi val-
ley westward to the Rocky Mountains,
and have also occurred on the middle and
north Pacific coast. The rainfall in south-
ern Georgia and northern Florida has been
excessively heavy. Jacksonville reports
2.92 inches, which makes 12.86 inches of
rainfall in the past four days at that
place. In Texas the rainfall has been con-
fined principally, to central and northeast-
ern counties Changes in temperature
have been nominal. The wether in this
vicinity will probably continue partly
cloudy tenight and Saturday, with light
to fresh southerly winds. There were no
positive indications of rain at date of re-
port.

a large shipment of sil-

pered with, and the matter even went to
such an extreme that a dinner basket
was seized filled with silverware to the
value of more than $80. The thief was
slick enough to not claim the basket when
i -T!
it was taken in charge by the detectives :
sent here from New York, and no case
could be made against him.
In one instance a case of Stetson hats
df high grade was said to have been op-
ened and half a dozen hats valued at $8
each were distributed among the gang.
This was easily done from the fact that
the thieves caught the watchmen off
guard for a few minutes and the head-
gear was secreted under their jumpers
auid held down by belts which the men
are in the habit of wearing. ' i'/\ '

It is claimed that a year or ko ago ;
employe was sent here from -the New
York end of the line to look after the
company’s-interests. The man had been
a boss of some sort and his familiarity
with merchandise is said to have been so
well developed that he could smell a case
of dry goods and tell what it contained,
and he used his instinct to profitable ad-
vantage. The man was finally fired, but
tales are still told about his thieving pro-
clivities. One cold day, the story -goes;
several cases of dry goods were being lift-
ed out of the vessel’s hold, and this man,
sniffing about the boxes, told the men to
set a few of those cases aside and they
would take out a few things “just for
fun.” One case was opened, it is alleged,
and a fine overcoat was taken out by thia
unscrupulous individual. “Pretty cold to-
day,” he said as he tried on one coat after
another until he could find one that fitted.
The garment was put aside and worn horns
that night.
The gang was finally broken up and
every one of .the men discharged during
the Christmas holidays. A case of whisky
is said to have been their undoing. Down
in the hold one of them pried open a box
containing some “seven-year-old corn,”
and the whole gang got drunk and Insti-
gated a regular dog fight. The result was
the'-boss and his rowdies were fired.
A few weeks ago a case of Panama hats
arriving here by one of the Morgan ships
showed signs of having been tampered
with, and when opened by the company’s
age<nt five of the hats were missing. The
men on the vessel testified that they had
discovered that the hats were missing
and had evidently been taken by some one
while the goods were in transit from the
wholesale houses to the docks in New
York.
The discovery of the continuous steal-
ings which has just been unearthed has
created considerable interest all over the
country, and the steamship officials are
glad to have discovered the leak and the
plans whereby thejr have lost thousands of
dollars worth of freight and merchandise.
