as bleak and as drear as was ever lashed
by th® waves of a turbulent sea, but when
reason and conscience are in harmony and
judgment impartial demands, there must
be a deciding. The world grows darker,
but the inner light beams brighter and
the songs of the invisible choir are still
heard from afar.
But in all the walks of life, principle is
required, is demanded, and he who has
no well defined principle in view can be
tossed about with every wind of doctrine
and has no settled abiding place, or sound
conviction upon anything.
The person who can believe two en-
tirely dissimilar things at the same time
is not a person of convictions, but a per-
son of hypocrisy and double-xnindedness
and cannot be trusted upon any question.
There are times when there must be
much endurance in order to stand for
principle, but the real manhood or wom-
anhood will suffer long and be. kind for a
principle—not a theory, not a hearsy, not
a mere syth, but sound, living and im-
cpelling principle.' “B© strong, therefore,

There comes a time in the life of
one when the future does not look
roseate as at other times. There are
days that are all gloom and sadness. Life
is filled with changes and the punctua-
tions of the songs of cheer are entirely
too far apart.
There are partings of the ways and we
are often left to pass over the bridge
of separation alone and proceed on our
journey unaccompanied by anyone.
Too often the ears of humanity are re-
galed with solemn dirges, when happy
laughter should cheer the soul,
are too many people who speak unkind
things, before they have thought of the
import of the words they say. Some peo-
ple can scarcely say a good word of any
one, but can easily see every one’s faults
and foibles.
There are great crises which call for in-
dividual settlement and adjustment. It has
ever been so and will continue to be so
until time unveils eternity.
There are grave questions that present
themselves for solution and they must
be solved. It may tear the heart and
crush the soul. It may separate father
from son and brother from brother. It
may drive the smile from the face and
joy, for a time, from the life, and leave
one like John of old upon a Patmos island
