What happens when: "You" becomes "Y'all"?
"Me" becomes "We”?
"Mine" becomes "Our"?
One powerful lesson that jumped out at me from the Greek course was that the word
"You" in the New Testament is plural most of the time. Or, if you're from the South as I am, "You"
plural translates as "Y'all".
Individualistic thinking is a modem, post-enlightenment thinking pattern. This was even
the mind-set of the Greeks, but the early church was bom in community. Making up this new
Body were all kinds of people, the "goyim" (common people) along with the leaders.
All through my growing-up years, I was taught to be an individual. And in Young Life one
tends to succeed individualistically. But the true Kingdom of God is not so. God does treat us as
individuals in terms of our personal sin and personal growth, but it is imperative for us to see that
he also deals with us as a group. He even forgives us as we forgive others.
The Scriptures make this very clear:
(1) You (y'all) maybe My witnesses.
(2) You (y'all) need to repent, for the Kingdom of God is near.
(3) We have all fallen short of the glory of God.
(4) Our Father, who art in heaven.
What I saw through my Greek studies was that the first church was a church of
community. I went to the Scriptures looking at the "you" as singular and became convicted that I
cant be saved and go to heaven without you. It's not just my Jesus but our Lord and Savior. And
we live this life in Him together. Thank you, Lord, that even though we sometimes see ourselves
and act as if we're just a collection of individuals, you call the Body one in all and all in one.
