... From the pastor
You don't have to "find Christ;" just open the eyes of your soul, and there He is again!
Have you noticed Him appearing when you were most in trouble? Have you seen signs of
His grieving when you did or said something you ought not have? Have you given Him credit for
your achievements, or appealed to Him when you faced closed doors?
Jesus comes after long and elaborate predictions by many prophets and signs. But He
comes without warning. We had been told that a virgin would bear a Child Who would save us;
that He would die an ignominious death; that He would overcome death and rise again; and that
He would extract His church from this world and then destroy the world. But each of these
comings was a shock to many. Shepherds and cynics, people who lived on prayer and people
who lived for profit, lovers of God, haters of God, and people ignorant of God - all looked up, and
there He was!
Today marks the beginning of an ancient Christian season called "Advent." It is the
prelude to Christmas, and represents with its colorful circle of candles the four comings of Christ:
As an infant-Savior in Bethlehem
As a martyr-Savior at Calvary
As a Redeemer-Savior at Resurrection
As Judge (not Savior) at Judgement
Baptists do not universally celebrate Advent. But it is a powerful reminder that Jesus Christ keeps
entering our lives; and so at Wheeler we join the hundreds of millions of Christians who recognize
this four-Sunday season.
We borrow for the introduction to this season a popular vernacular interjection: "Whoop!
There He is!"
HE
WHOOP! THERE-ffIS!
