CHURCH OFFICES CLOSED FOR MLK BIRTHDAY
2
TOMORROW DO NOT GO FISHING
It is a holiday -- but not just a "day off' for us. It is the day legally set aside to remember
and celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Schools are closed, government
offices and most banks are closed; and you and I should take that time to go somewhere
and reflect on the massive contributions Dr. King made to all our lives. Check your
newspapers for events throughout the community commemorating him — AND TAKE A
CHILD WITH YOU.
LIFE AND DEATH
Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church has evolved from a young church to a community with an
increasing number of funerals. The loss of several members and loved ones of members
within the last six weeks is sobering indeed. But isn't it just like God to send to us, even
while we are grieving, the empowering infusion of His Spirit in revival? We lean on Him
while we adjust to the passing of those who have been called home (Booker, Houser,
McNeil, Brown, and many mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and other precious relatives
and friends); but we thank Him that even while we hurt, He sends to us joy. Dr. Jeremiah
Wright was a major blessing to us last week. Thanks to all who helped with that revival —
get tapes and share them with somebody; they may be hurting, too!
WE WORSHIP TONIGHT - WITHOUT LABEL
We are a Baptist church, and proud of it. But our sister church is an Episcopal Church,
and we are not inclined to try to convert them. Instead, we both drop our denominational
labels and share a praise service this evening at 6:00. Join us and be part of God's
"unlabelled" flock. Choir members from both churches will sing, and our own Rev. John
Stevens (an Episcopalian Baptist) will bring the message.
WOMEN’S RETREAT NEXT WEEKEND
This years' Women's Retreat will be held January 21-23, at Del Lago Resort in Conroe,
Texas. The theme is "Today's Christian Woman", taken from Proverbs 31:10. Ms.
Deborah Cole is this years' Chairperson. If you need more details, please contact her.
