NOTES
... From the pastor
Sunday, November 27, 1994
A prophet tells us, seven centuries before Jesus is bom in
Bethlehem, that He comes with strength, to feed His flock like a shepherd
(Isaiah 40:11, 12). We need that word when everything is going wrong.
So lift up your head and rejoice - the Shepherd comes!
And at Wheeler we proclaim these comings, even though many
Baptists have abandoned the tradition as the exclusive property of the
Roman Catholic church, as something all Christians ought to celebrate.
What greater comfort is there than knowing that God keeps on coming into
our predicament? You need to know that when you are sick, or broke, or
discouraged, or in grief, you are not alone - God comes into your crying-
room to lift your spirits.
Shepherd/
HERE COME DE JUDGE
Today the wreaths and candles remind us that God comes into our
corrupt and battered world to comfort us. This is "Advent," (French, ad, "to"
+ venire, "come"), the ancient Christian tradition of marking the four
Sundays before Christmas as reminders that God comes into our world as
(1) a baby at Bethlehem
(2) a martyr at Calvary
(3) a resurrected Redeemer at Easter
(4) a condemning Judge at the end of the world
