THE WORLD NEEDS YOUR PRAYERS FOR 1996
1995 has been Oklahoma City and O. J. Simpson and more brutality in Ruanda and
Bosnia. It has been bitter confrontation about race and about budget priorities. It has
been crises in your own family and neighborhood. That's why you ought to be in church
at midnight Sunday, December 31, to pray in the New Year at Watch Night. Come early
enough to eat with us, stay to play with us, and hang in to worship with us. See details in
center-fold and fill out a Volunteer Card from the pew racks.
COME BACK FOR A TASTE OF THE REAL CHRISTMAS
We have had an avalanche of seasonal events this year. Family Groups, auxiliaries, and
ancillary organizations have filled our December calendar. Today at 4:00 is a major event
to praise the Holy Baby. All our choirs collaborate to put on a concert of Christmas
spirituals (see page 8 for details). We know that the Deacons and Deaconesses have a
fellowship at 5:30, but they can get in an hour of worship with our Music Department and
still make the Andersons' home. Bring your children — it is all part of helping them to
know that Christmas is not just toys and other gifts, but the adoration of a Child laid in a
manger 2,000 years ago, Who is still redeeming the world!
WE DO HAVE ROLAND GRESHAM WITH US TODAY
We announced by mistake last Sunday that jazz guitarist Roland Gresham of Nashville
would be in our worship services. That was wrong. He is with us this Sunday. We
welcome him to Wheeler, and hope you will like him enough to order his music — that is
how he makes his living.
YOUR CONSTITUTION STANDS UNCHANGED
Last Monday night 43 of you voted on tenure for Trustees. The vote was 25 for tenure,
17 against. Such a policy requires an amendment to the church constitution, and we have
gone through a three-meeting procedure to make such an amendment possible. But
amendment, unlike other issues we vote on, requires a two-thirds majority, so the
amendment proposal failed by four votes. (2/3 of 43 votes would be 28.64.) This means
the Trustees are not bound by term limits, and the constitution stands as it was before
December 11. We hope and pray that this issue will not divide us, and that those who
were pro-term limits and those who were anti-term limits will come together in Christian
unity. The Trustees have been good stewards; let's keep supporting them.
