Public Can Have Voice In
Hunting-Fishing Regulations
An Editorial
By James T. Bass
Each year the public is given the opportunity to
voice their opinions regarding hunting and fishing
regulations in Franklin County through a public
hearing held by the Parks and Wildlife Department
(P&WD) at the courthouse in Mt. Vernon
The hearing this year is scheduled for Tuesday,
March 13, at 3:00 p.m. in the county courthouse.
The legislature has given the responsibility for the
setting of seasons, bag limits, and methods of taking
the wildlife resources in Franklin County to the P&WD
Following the hearing the P&WD Commission
considers the comments and evidence presented at the
hearing. They also consider the findings of department
biologists previous to setting the seasons, bag limits
and the methods of taking the wildlife resources of
Franklin County for the next year.
The last two years have been very hard on the fish
population of I^ake Cypress Springs Many feel that the
1977 Bass spawn was destroyed due to the level of the
lake dropping during the spawning season
For this reason many feel the P&WD should tarry
out a re-stocking program.
If evidence is presented to bear out this belief at the
hearing it would have considerable bearing on the
'commissions decision regarding re-stocking
Policies governing such hearings usually allow the
acceptance of comments either verbally or written or
both. Persons who cannot attend, but wish to present
written comment, should contact Frank Ricketson,
local game warden
Residents of the county or other persons who might
not be residents of the county who are interested in the
regulations affecting wildlife of the county should plan
to present their coments at the hearing.
