Editor’s Note: Mike and Ann Edwards are a cog in the wheel of
this community that would be hard to replace. They support
Franklin County with their time and their money. Like the
volunteer fire department that might not be able to save a burning
home, they don’t deserve criticism for trying.

Setting Beautiful
Dear Editor:
When we read the letter to the editor from Ms. Margaret Green,
we could not believe she was describing the same contest in which
our daughter also competed. We had not expected a perfect or
polished pageant and we were very pleased with the way it was
organized and judged. We also think the location was great as it
allowed the participants of the ice cream contest and other ac-
tivities to enjoy the pageant without missing their activities and it
is a very beautiful setting for a beauty pageant.
The idea of dis-allowing any child from participating because
their parent(s) are willing to contribute their time and energy to
the contest is as absurd as were the remarks about land ownership
and the “elite” versus outsiders. (We have been a resident for on-
ly 13 months and love it here.)
Our daughter is not a loser either, although she did not win a ti-
tle or award in the competition, because she has the capacity to
enjoy the competition and the ability to accept the judges deci-
sions without bitterness.

What do you think of the news
media and advertising?
Published on page eight of this
issue of the Optic-Herald is a
20-question survey in which the
public is given the opportunity to
answer the above question.
Those questions are seeking to
determine advertising, reading
and listening habits, as well as the
public’s opinion of the news
media. And although it’s not
necessary to answer every ques-
tion, there’s space provided for
local respondents to further detail
their viewpoints.
The names of respondents are
needed to verify the authenticity
of returns, but the identity of each
will be protected on a totally con-
fidential basis.
Conducted by a statewide
marketing interest, results of the
poll could well determine the
nature of advertising this area
reads, sees and hears in the future.
Readers are requested to con-
sider participating in this survey.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO LIFE
It l< not the critic who counta, not the man who

The credit belongs to the men who is actually in

and comes short again and again; who knows the

A “Welcome Relief”
Dear Editor:
After reading the letter Mrs. Green wrote to the Optic-Herald I
felt compelled to write to the paper concerning her comments on
the Miss Lake Cypress Springs contest. We have owned property
in Tall Tree for 11 years and have enjoyed our lake house each
weekend and holiday during the last 11 years. We were not able to
participate in many of the activities Mount Vernon has to offer,
as we were not full time residents. In November of 1986 we made
the decision to move to Mount Vernon permanently. As perma-
nent residents we have not encountered any of the items Mrs.
Green spoke of in her comments. Mike and Ann Edwards have
made us more than welcome and we did not have to flash any
money in return. We have met some of the friendliest people in
Mount Vernon all the way from the merchants to the grocery
store clerks to the teachers at Mount Vernon school. As a matter
of fact, I have never encountered any of the items she quoted in
her article. I volunteered this year to serve on the AquaFest Com-
mittee and again Mount Vernon welcomed me and 1 felt a part of
our community. Many weeks and hours went into the preparation
of AquaFest, all with volunteer labor. Owning property in
Franklin County had nothing to do with how the winners were
determined. They were judged on many other things.
Unfortunately, there can only be one winner and this year’s
winner will certainly represent us well, as she is a very fine young
lady.
I don’t know where she is hearing all these negative remarks
from the people of Mount Vernon as 1 deal with them on a day to
day basis and have heard nothing. As far as Mount Vernon going
under, this town goes back a number of years and it is obvious it is
here to stay.
We take our hats off to you for a very happy eight months of
living here and we look forward to many more good years with
the City of Mount Vernon. After getting out of the rat race in the
DFW area, your town and people have been a welcome relief.
Please continue the “good work.”

questions as to the efficient ar-
rangement of the facility to pro-
vide surveilance and handling of
prisoners with a minimal number
of jailers: whether the structure
would meet requirements under
present jail standards; and
because of its previous use and
construction materials used,
would it meet environmental stan-
dards.
“The consensus of the Court
has been for the construction of
any new jail facility on the proper-
ty north of the jail, which has
already been purchased by the
County,” stressed Judge Foster.
“Any change from that plan
needs to be carefully considered
from all aspects before holding a
public hearing.”
Barker asked and was extended
an invitation to be present for the
annual jail inspection on Wednes-
day, Sept. 9, by an inspector from
the Texas Commission on Jail
Standards. It was suggested that
the inspector be requested to view
the building proposed for renova-
tion.
Commissioners agreed that a
favorable opinion on the project
from a combination of experts
would be required for them to fur-
ther investigate the project as
plausable, including the Jail Stan-
dard Commission, an architect
and an engineer, both familiar
with jail requirements and who
had previously worked on such
projects.
