Miss Deal constructed a gar-
ment for the Casual category,
Miss Nance competed in the
Consumer Buying Division,
Formal category and Miss
Johnson participated in the
Design Competition, Textile
category. She will advance to
the State Design Competition.
The awards for the State
Design Competition are schol-
arships of $250 lor first place
and $150 for second place

Judges for the local contest
were Dr. Richard Flournoy, Dr.
Natalie Holley, and Lisa Foust.
Event chairmar. was Ed Crab-
tree. He was assisted by Joan
Me In vale and Charlotte
Chaney. Minnie Laughton is
the on-campus coordinator for
the contest at MV1SD.
The original 5-7 minute
speeches were related to the
Rotary Four-Way Test and
based on the topic “Racial ten-
sion in America, can the 4-Way
Test Bring Harmony to a Na-
tion ." The Four-Way Test fol-
lows: “Is it the Truth? Is it Fair
to all concerned? Will it build
gixxlw ill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all con-
cerned?”
Entries are judged on con-
tent, organization and delivery.

Stephanie Johnson was se-
lected as winner of the 1996
Rotary Better Speakers Con-
test. sponsored by the Mount
Vernon Rotary Club. The fi-
nalists were presented during
the Friday, April 12, meeting
of the club.
Miss Johnson was presented
with a plaque and a $250 col-
lege scholarship from the local
club. She is a senior at Mount
Vernon High School and the
daughter of Janie Johnson of
Mount Vernon and Steve
Johnson of Texarkana.
Second place in the contest
went to Will Ramsay, son of
Lannyand Kitty Ramsay. Third
place was claimed by Allison
Ramsay, daughter of Tom and
Laurie Ramsay.
Other finalists for the con-
test were Laura Marsh. Jaime
Jaggers, Stephen Ferguson.
Misty Carpenter and Joseph
Fincher. A total of 27 students
entered the contest
Miss Johnson was to repre
sent the local club at the Dis-
trict 58.30 in Kilgore Saturday,
April 13. Results of that contest
were not available al press time
