recovery
Dr. Paul Piefer, who prac-
tices dentistry on Hwy. 37 South
in Mount Vernon, expects to
have a full recovery from an
accident Sunday which injured
his right hand.
He cut three fingers on his
right hand with a circular saw
late Sunday evening, July 21,
while he was cutting paneling
at his home in Mount Vernon.
Treatment was at East Texas
Medical Center, Tyler, where
doctors reconnected blood ves-
sels in the index finger. He ex-
pects another surgery on the
finger next week to reconnect
the tendons and ligaments. The
other two fingers were not cut
that badly.
Dr. Piefer said Wednesday
that he hopes to have his office
reopened in four to six weeks.
One of his daughters, Sandra,
is applying for admission to
dental school this year.

Needs and Common Sense
Dear Editor:
We all want good education for our children, but is the
proposed new high school about educational needs? Before
we borrow an additional $ 14,8(X),000 we need to use com-
mon sense.
1. District school enrollment last year was 1,443 and there
are 206,(XX) sq. ft. under roof. Estimates are that enrollment
will increase 233 students in five years. Isn't's a new 140,(XX)
square ft. high school more than we need?
2. No one knows how much enrollment will increase in
the future and there have been no studies (the Superintendent
calls it a best guess). Shouldn't we know more before we
spend $ 14.8 million? Isn't additional study needed?
3. How much of the design of this new high school is not
needed for education? What features are costly frills not
directly needed for education?
4. Is there enough money in the $14.8 million budget to
renovate the existing facilities for the lower grades? Won't
operating costs and maintenance costs increase substan-
tially? What are all of the costs and how does this effect our
taxes?
Common sense dictates that more study is needed before
we put another mortgage on our childrens' future. This
school bond election is premature and we urge a NO vote.
Next time, maybe the homework will be done before the
election, and we can vote on financing educational needs.
