Sincerely Yours,
FREEMAN W. BURFORD
EDITOR S NOTE: The above letter from Freeman W. Burford, Texas oil man and prominent in other bush
ness circles, gives in some detail the tenant home owner plan as is being advocated by Mr. Burford and which he is
urging the Texas Legislature to consider as one of the vital mediums necessary of consideration to put Texas farm-
ers on" an independent basis.
I invite suggestions as to the solution of this vital problem. 1 hope Texas
farmers and businessmen with farm interests at heart will write me person-
ally and let me know what action they believe should be taken to bring ■
speedy relief to the fifty per cent of Texas farmers who work year in and
year out cultivating land which is not their own. My address is P. O, Box
2519, Dallas Texas

FREEMAN W. BURFORD
Dallas, Texas
Dear Editor:
On the first day of this month I wrote, as a private citizen, to members
of The House of Representatives and the Senate of Texas, calling attention
to the immediate need of aiding the tenant farmers of our State.
Knowing that your newspaper has always stood for the best interests of
Texas farmers and that you are deeply interested in the prosperity and pro-
gress of your surrounding farm territory, 1 am hoping that you will publish
this letter.
Since making my ideas public I have received a number of letters from
farmers and businessmen in all sections of Texas approving the theory that
something should be done at once to alleviate the distressing situation of ag-
ricultural tenants. Some of these messages have come from outstanding mem-
bers of our senate and house. ~~
My plan, which some of my correspondents mention as the Burford plan,
briefly is; state provision to aid tenant farmers buy the land they cultivate
on long time terms; to make every renter a land owner; to give every ten-
ant farmer in Texas the pride and independence which comes with the poss-
ession of his own acres and a place which he can truly call home; to give
the tiller of the soil a chance in life by abolishing absentee landlordism
which creates poverty and despair; to make available to every tenant more
liberal credit; under State supervision, for his planting and harvesting.
