local chapter of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars will be held here
next Thursday night at 7:301
o’clock In the District Court ,
room, according to an announce- I
ment by I. L. (Ted) Hinton, de- I K W|
partment deputy chief of staff J
of the State headquarters.
This will be one of 48 East and
Northeast Texas chapters ’ to be
organized, he said, because of
numerous requests which have
been received in the State office, j
Fourteen already have been org-
anized, he said.
The organization was 1
in 1899 and all sailors, soldiers
and marines who have seen serv-
ice on foreign shores or hostile
waters are eligible for member-
ship, he said. At present there
are 4,126 posts in the United
States with a total of more than
1,000,000 members.
Mr. Hinton is working out of
Dallas.

T. Morgan, pastor of the local
Methodist church, in company
with a group of members of this
church, is to attend a regional
A!der3"nte Commemoration serv-
ice at Houston Thursday. The
Houston gathering is one of a
series to be held in principal cities
of the state during the next few
days.
Among those to attend from
Overton arc the pastor, Mrs. H.
T. Morgan, N. B Hampton, C. C.
Williams, and Rev. R. L. Jack-
son, pastor of the London M<,tI"'-
dist church.

Onions Rout Bandits.
RENO, Nev. (UP).—An Im-
provised tear-gas bomb routed a
robber at the grocery of Henry
R. Brewster. Armed with an au-
tomatic, a robber ordered Brew-
ster to hand over the contents of
the cash register. Brewster reach-
ed for his onion counter, grabbed
a half dozen, and started throw-
ing them at the thief. The robber
fired once at the floor and fled.

SAN FRANCISCO (UP). —
Treasure Island, the artificial Isle
created In San Francisco bay for
the 1939 Golden Gate Internation-
al exposition, has reached the
point where It needs a skin graft-
ing operation. It Is In the market
for 10.000 cubic yards of top soil
necessary for its $2,000,000 land-
acaping program.
