WASHINGTON. — Veterans’ ad-
ministration said that almost half a
million war veterans were not old
enough to vote.
A tabulation of former servicemen
by age groups shows, the agency
said, that 440,000 are less than 21
years of age and 43,000 are under 20.
Three out of five, or 60 percent,
are under 30. The average age of all
World War II veterans as of June 30
is 29.1 years.
From a total of 14,045,000 men and
316,000 women the age groups in-
clude:
From 20 to 24 years of age, inclu-
sive, 3,971,000; 25 to 29, 4,771,000; 30
to 34, 2,841,000; 35 to 39, 1,575,000;
40 to 44, 757,000; 45 to 49, 312,000; 50
to 54, 67,000; 55 to 59, 14,000; 60 to
65,000, 6,000; 65 or older, 4,000.

PONTIAC, Ill.—A lot of venerable
vehicles pass through the safety in-
spection lane here, but one was in
class with the horseless carriage pi-
loted by Vere Goff and Vernon Bos-
hart. But their 1904 model, two-
cylinder, chain-drive Sears met all
but one requirement. It had no
windshield wiper. The reason was
obvious. It had no windshield.

Army Engineers have been given
the “green light” on construction of
new Veterans Administration hospi-
tals at Shreveport, La., and Big
Spring, Texas, VA announced this
week.
It is expected that the engineers
will advertise for bids on the hospi-
tals within sixty days.
Meanwhile, by order of General
Omar Bradley, VA’s new hospital
construction program was being con-
siderably revised because of the
mounting costs of building.
In order to build the hospitals with
the money originally appropriated
by Congress, it will be necessary to
eliminate all features not essential to
good medical treatment for veterans,
Bradley said.
It is expected that major modifica-
tions in plans for hospitals at Bon-
ham, Dallas, New Orleans and
Mound Bayou and Tupelo, Miss., will
be made.
Plans for hospitals at Houston and
El Paso will not be affected by the
order.

Q.—I am a World War II veteran
and work part time. I intend to ap-
ply for readjustment allowance and
would like to know how the amount
I receive is computed.
A.—As a partially employed vet-
eran you can receive the maximum
number of allowances to which the
length of your service in the armed
forces entitles you, but each weekly
allowance would be reduced by the
wages you receive so that readjust-
ment allowance and wages combined
will not exceed $23 a week. Each
weekly allowance thus received, re-
gardless of the amount of payment,
would reduce by one the number of
remaining payments available.
Q.—I was released from the army
with a bad conduct discharge and
would like to know if I am entitled
to any of the benefits under the G. I.
Bill?
A.—You should contact your near-
est Veterans Administration office
for a decision as to whether you were
discharged under conditions other
than dishonorable since that is the
determining factor for entitlement to
benefits.
Q.—Will the. amount of compensa-I
tion I receive for a service incurred
disability be reduced in event I find
employment?
A.—No. Earnings from such work
do not affect the amount of compen-
sation received. .
Q.—Is there any limit to the
amount I can borrow under the G-I
Bill?
A.—You can borrow any amount
that the lender is willing to lend you,
but VA will guarantee only 50 per-
cent of the amount up to $4,000 on a
real estate loan and up to $2,000 on
a business loan.

A record enrollment of nearly
100,000 World War II veterans in
Southwestern Colleges and univer-
sities this fall is anticipated by the
Veterans Administration and educa-
tors.
VA officials expect about a 15
percent increase in the number of
veterans attending college under the
G. I. Bill as compared to last spring’s
enrollment of 85,000 in the higher
institutions of learning in Texas,
Louisiana and Mississippi.
Veterans entering school for the
first time should obtain their certif-
icates of eligibility immediately from
the proper VA regional office. Others
who plan to change schools
courses of study this fall must
tain prior approval from VA.
Veterans enrolled in school prior
to this fall and not planning to
change courses or transfer to another
school may continue their education
without contacting the Veterans Ad-
ministration.
