CINCINNATI.—A cut of 6 percent
in the price of Ivory soap and 8 per-
cent in the price of crisco vegetable
shortening was announced here late
yesterday by the Proctor & Gamble
Co.
The price drop reflected the lower
cost of raw materials, officials said.
Since the peak prices that prevailed
last March the company has reduced
prices of soap products 10 to 22 per-
cent and the prices of vegetable
shortening by 35 percent.

WASHINGTON. — The CIO Sun-
day hurled new defiance at the Taft-
Hartley labor law by placing in the
hands of members a “1947 Voting
Guide”—listing the actions of Con-
gress members — along with advice
how to defeat in 1948 those who
“voted against the people.”
“Let the people speak,” counseled
an open letter signed by CIO Presi-
dent Philip Murray who last month
sought a test of the new legislation
He then indorsed a candidate in a
Maryland special congressional elec-
tion and directed that his statement
be published in the CIO News.
But this and similar attitudes to-
ward the law has not yet produced
federal action. One section of the
act forbids “expenditures” in con-
nection with a federal election—and
this was taken by its sponsors to
mean when the law was passed that
union-financed papers can not com-
ment politically on a campaign or
election.

CHICAGO. — Strawberry blonde,
21-year-old Wanda Kulig put a price
of $20,000 on her tresses.
She sought that amount from the
Edgewater hospital in a suit in which
she charged all her “beautiful hair”
was cut off when she underwent a
mastoid operation last February 27
although her physician had said only
a small patch would be snipped.
Because of the snipping, Miss
Kulig claimed, she had to give up
her job as a dentist’s receptionist
and won’t be able to find employ-
ment for at least a year—until the
blonde tresses grow back.

ALBANY, N. Y.—The famed Ten-
nessee mountaineer and hero of
World War I, Sgt. Alvin C. York, hit
it lucky last week and turned the ta-
bles on some of the biggest com-
panies in the business.
The sergeant put his York No.. 2
well on the pump Thursday with
sustained production of 14 barrels an
hour, after a year of intermittent
drilling which cost him less than
$2,000, including the price of his 30-
year-old cable tool rig.
In cash, at current crude prices,
this means about $572 a day to the
«x-drill sergeant whose first lucky
strike was back in 1918 when he
went into a shell hole in Germany
single-handed and dragged out a
score or more of Hun prisoners. For
this exploit York got international
recognition, a Congressional Medal
of Honor and about $600,000 from
the proceeds of a Hollywood motion
picture based on the incident which
still is running.
The thAig that tickles York is that
several of the major oil companies
have been drilling but he beat them
to pay dirt—even if a 14-barrel-an-
hour well wouldn’t mean much to
the big boys.
The Standard Oil Company of
California has spent well over half a
million dollars using a big, new
rotary rig near the village of Camp-
bellsville in Giles County without
striking oil.
