they parted. Marton said she never
saw Betty alive again, but police
believed she saw her once more-
when she wound yards of adhesive
tape around Betty’s mouth. The
tape, a blow on the head and an
electric light cord around Betty's
neck combined to kill her.
Marton’s fingerprints were found
on the tape, police said. They were
also found on other objects in the
room.
Since she left Iowa, Marion has
been a manicurist, chorus girl, ac-
tress. organist and shoplifter, po-
lice said. She liked the fineries of
life and got them.
Marion wm arrested with Janies
Kirk, an admitted pick pocket,
who »he said was her husband. Her
alibi in the Chambers* murder was
that she and Kirk had smoked
opium on the day of the murder
and had slept until 4 p. m.
As they were taken to separate
cells, Kirk whispered
"tell the truth, kid. and keep out
of the electric chair ”
Another suspect, Al Bregar. was
arrested in connection with Betty
Chambers' or nth. but police doubt-
ed his guilt.

"Capital punishment i.* not a
pleasant thing to look upon but I
feel it is a strong deterrent and

Crime Deterrent
Keemje argued that there vas no

but added that capital punishment*,
should be enforced more cf’en in
cases of first degree murder to be
a deterrent.
"The feeling anipnir cr.minals
that it is 'easy to beat the chair,'
hrs reduced the value uf capital
punishment," he said
Sutherland pointed out that he
