Cigarette manufacture by the application of

than all other Cigarettes combined. This
surely confirms the public’s confidence
in the superiority of Lucky Strike.

With one of those astounding re-
velations ef form which have al-
ways charact'rizcd Congers ca-
reer. the Dttnois A. C. flyer came
back to beat Nurmi in the Wana-
maker Mile In the MiUroae A. A.
gam* s th Madison Square Garden.
Conger’s time of 4 minutes, 17 2-5
seconds was fast, but 5 2-5 seconds
slower than Nurmi's own indoor
record for the mile.
A Marvelous Finish
Few distance runners have ever
shown a finish equal to Conger's
He stayed back in the pack in
his race against Nurmi until tl.e
final lap With a marvelous b list
of .•-peed. Congrer shot past the
famous Flying Finn and crossed
the tape eight yards ahead of
Nurmi and going awpy.
Head cocked to one side, his arms
and legs fiy.ng in all direction
Conger can't lye headed oil on cer-
tain occasions, not even by a 7-
tiines Olympic champion Then
again the nservoir which suplies
the power lor those driving finishes
doe.-ii t seem to work and Conger
can't come up from the rear Sel-
dom does Conger ever take the lead
and held it. He always alluw-. th.?
o't.cr man to set the pace and then
times himself to beat that man
Nurmi's defeat was attributed by
many to the fact that he ran the
(list part of the race against C.n-
jer I jo slow Eddie FaiTt ll, Har-
vard 1 ack coach, believes Nur. i
did not “tak*;' Conger out fast
cnourJi.
Conger first came into promi-
nence ■‘hlle a student al Iowa State
In June. 1927. he won the national
collegiate A. A. mile championship
in 4:17 3-5
Defeated Dr. Peltier
The next lime Conger was heard
from in a big way was when he
beat Dr. Peltzcr at 1 000 meters at
Chicago in February, 1923. Staging
one of his famous sprints. Conger
swept past Ray Dodge and Dr
Pelytzcr in a flying finish and fin-
ished ten yatds ahead of the Ger-
man Conger s time wa> x 37. Con-
ger was merely an added starter in
the event as the race had expect-
ed to have been between Peltzer
and Dcdg.?.
A few weeks later Conger again
shocked the track world by defeat-
ing Lloyd Hahn in the tameus el
bowing race at Kansas City. Hahn
claimed Conger elbowed >n a cor-
ner and quit the tace us Conger
' shot ahead in the stretch. Ccnr.er'a
time for the 1,000 yards was 2 L.
better l.tan the record of 2.12 4-5.
but disallowed because track con-
ditions were not up to regiititton.
