J Lin Thomas, dairy specialist,
discussed pastures anti prices. He
warned the dairymen that they
must produce cheaper milk if they
would compete with the dairymen
of the North and that it was now
competitive proposition and that
j while Texas had an advantage over
! the North in pastures and feeding
' that southern dairymen must em-

better pastures and better cattle. He
said experiments had demonstrated
that the secret of producing cheap
milk is plenty of pasture and plen-

grain to each six pounds of milk.
| This will Involve better hay and
better pastures and he strongly ad-

Cow Testing Is
Shown by Payne
11'-’
The importance of cow testing
association* in detecting scrub an-
imals. is stressed by County Agent-
M T Payne, who point* out that by
this means only may the livestock
herdi. of the county be improved.
The building up of herds is one of
the needs of the county and thia
is one of the projects included in
the county agent's program for the
coming year.
The Denton County Cow Testing
Aisiciation and the boys' 4-H calf
club are mediums that are serving
to assist Payne in the program.
Valor of Tenting
"Denton County dairy
are fortunate in having a
herd improvement association,
which the cows are tested for the
total amount of butter fat and milk
produced during the year, ths
amount of feed that is consumed
by each cow. wliich is charged
against the profits she has paid
through milk and butter fat, thus
obtaining the net cash profit,”
Payne said. “When it is found that
a cow is not producing a profit, ths
dairyman knows how to find the
hutched He Immediately can elim-
inate from his herd the boarders
and keep the cows that are profit-
able. We are also fortunate in hav-
ing Leon Derryberry as cow tester
in the Denton County Association.
He has a lar*e number of dairy-
men in the association now and is
working in cooperation with the
county agent in developing the
dairy association in Denton Coun-
ty. At an early date Derryberry will
be in position to handle a number
of additional herds and it is urged
that all dairymen who are inter-
ested in this kind of work either
see him or the county went; in re-
gard to the workings of the assocla-'
tion. Those who are in the associa-
tion now are well pleased and since
dairy associations have been oper-
ating in other states since 1908, it
is conclusive that it pays, or the
dairymen would not continue to
support such associations.
Improvement Needed
"One thing that is needed In Den-
ton County is to improve our live-
stock and working to this end. a
large number of pure bred dairy
heifers and dairy bulls have been
and will be brought into the county
this year through the boys’ 4-H club
and interested dairymen. 1 notice a
1 eport from the cow testing associa
tion in San Antonio. This shows the
necessity of cow testing, and its
to eliminating the s?rub
