Stables, Dullaa,
That 7-7 tie played between Den-
ton ano Decatur will have to be
made up or forfeited. The Bear?
had understood that in ralnouts and
ties the game would be made up
as a | art of a (.oublt header the
next lunes the two ipnM met. How-
ever, Decatur says Its their home
game t nd Denton will have to go
over there to play.
Replying to the proposal that
Denton play at Decatur some
week day. Manager Claude Lin-
ville opined there was nothing
in the rule book to force Denton
to play on any day except Sun-
day. and he'd be doggoned if
his team did otherwise.

Softball attendance hit its peak
Thursday night when an estimated
1300 spectators turned out at the
city ball park. Given clear weather,
the Bears should pull In a good por-
tion of that number Sunday. Ex-
tra bleachers borrowed from the
horse show will be set up at Bear
Park for what is expected to be an
overflow crowd.

The largest attendance of the
season, an estimated 1,800, turned
out Thursday night at the city bull
park to see Plaza Theater lose a

saght Furniture Co. nine of Fort

In the first game Thursday, Y

In the first game at 7 o'clock,

tlie late game, Sanger meets Little

One bad inning, the third, spell-
ed defeat for Plaza, as Lysaght bat-
ted around for seven runs on three
hits, four errors, and four walks.

night's league
Worth
Under only one circumstance
wee Decatur willing to play two
games Sunday—and that con-
dition was losing the first, which
would put them out of the
money for the first half and
thereby make a second game
meaningless from their stand-
point.

al Pittsburgh, postponed.
As things now stand, if Denton
loses one of its two remaining
games and Keller wins both of It*,
no first-half champion could be de-
clared until after the Decatur game
is made up. The Bruins are willing
to play the game as part of a dou-
ble header when they make a re-
turn swing to Decatur in the second
half, but that date could conceiv-
ably be as late as Sept. 8
Aside from twin* good and
mad. one reason the Bears are
dead set on winning Sunday la
that by copping that tilt and
another against Grapevine the
following Sunday, they can win
the pennant and the give the tie
to Decatur without doing them-
selves damage.

CLEVELAND, June 14. —
Snuggled in a nine-way deadlock
for fifth place, two strokes oil the
sizzling pace as the second 18-hole
round started today, Byron Nelson
still was the people's choice—and
his own—to win this 46th national
open golf championship.
The transplanted Texan fired a
38-35—71, one under par for the
tough Canterbury Oolf Club ter-
rain, and then declared:
"I was misjudging my distance
on second show all day But that’s
the last mistake I'll be making in
this tournament."
Any poor judgment on second
shot* wasn't apparent as the 1939
open king and present ruler of the
PGA zinged a No. 4 wood to within
three feet of the cup on the 483-
yard 13th hole and then holed the
putt for an eagle.
Out front as the all-star cast
started today’s play were Toney
Penna of Cincinnati, O., who fin-
ished in a third-place tie In the 1938
championship at Denver, and Sam
Snead of Hot Springs, Va„ who has
made several valiant but futile Lids
to annex golfdotn's greatest prize.
The two leaders clipped three
strokes of! Canterbury's par 72.

Bears at Home -
Sunday, Need
Two for Flag
Needing only two more victories
to clinch the first half pennant of
the Brazos-Trtnlty League, the
Denton Bears return home Sunday
In a single game with Decatur after
five straight games on the road.
Game Lime will be 3 p. m. at Bear
Park, with batting and infield prac-
tice beginning at 1:30 for the home
team.
Although the Bruins will be fa-
vored. Decatur played the Denton
nine to a 7-7 10-lnnlng deadlock
in their previous meeting, at De-
catur. Dude Pearson will toe the
rubber for Denton, opposing De-
catur's ace, White Cullum. In six
previous Lilts the Denton right-
hander Is without a defeat and has
not been knocked from the box. His
last ofttlng was a 12-innlng 2-1
victory over Keller.
Should Denton win and Keller
lose at Weatherford Sunday, the
Bears would own the pennant out-
right. On another Brazos-Trtnlty
affair, Mineral Wells travels to
Grapevine to see who occupies the
loop cellar.
