The “cigar bean” of Batavia is a wild
fruit recently discovered in Batavia.
The pod is like a cigar in shape and
color, but only an inch long, *and when
put into water it rests on the surface
fcr several minutes,'then explodes like
a torpedo, hurling the seed in all di-
rections. If allowed to ripen iR <
warm place the po^ gradually splits
lengthwise front point to base. If
left to ripen on the plant it splits open
more suddenly.—?C. Y, World.
Pearls May Be Grown.
Beeent experiments by the experts
of the fish commission; in Washington
, have demonstrated that genuine pearls
of high quality may be grown in an
aquarium, fountains, fish ponds, and
in any other pools of water which can
sustain mussels, oysters and other
mollusks that emit ifacre, the beauti-
ful iridescent secretion of which pearl*
are made.—Chicago Chronicle.

Carnival Low Rates.
The Carnival season in New
Orleans is a season of absolute
gaiety and good humor. The
fame of the Cresent City in rela-
tion to its Mardi - Gras festivals
has spread until it has encom-
passed the entire earth. The
Carnival is made up of a series of
“fiestas” in which the people
participate generally, and which
creates a long train of brilliant,
occasions and gorgeous pageants.
The Carnival of 1900 will be the
most brilliant in the history of
New Orleans. There will be two
additional street parades; the one
occuring February 21, at night,
being an electrical display, the
others occuring as follows: zxi-i ,
