December 29. ‘
i December 29, 1845. is a memorable
date in the history dt Texas. It was
on that date thajt Congress finally
passed the Act admitting the republic
to a place of statehood in the Ameri-
can union of states. Owing to the ex-
istence of slavery in the republic of
Texas, admission liad twice been re-
fused. though Sam Houston had enn-
1 sistently sought to bring about annex-
ation. During the early days of the
Texas republic citizens had voted in
f annexation and the matter was press-
' ed in the Congress of the United States
; so frequently that the question was
£J made a side issue in the presidential
j campaign. James K. Polk who was
elected in 1844, had favored annexa-
tion that admission became a reality.
